Sharks Fall at Home

June 22, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

For the second time this week, Wilmington (6-12) was not only out hit, but also shut down by Holly Springs (7-13). In two games this week, the Salamanders have scored 19 runs on 30 hits against the Sharks. Meanwhile, Wilmington has mustered just three runs on 10 hits.

In the bottom of the first, the Sharks put together two hits with two outs against starter Christian Scafidi (2-0). However, the home team left them loaded on a fly out to right.

Those two hits would be the only two of the first five innings as Scafidi retired the next 13 batters.

In the third, Holly Springs struck first. Back-to-back hits to lead off the inning put runners on the corners. A groundout scored the game's first run and then the Salamanders added a second in the inning.

The next time the 'Manders came to bat another run scored. Ryan Orr tripled to left to score Daulton Martin to take a 3-0 lead.

Two innings later, Holly Springs expanded the lead to five. Carter Williams picked up his first hit of the night off Sharks starter Nick Bruno (0-2). Williams double to left to drive home two more with two outs.

Wilmington finally got on the board in the sixth. Wil Hoyle led off the inning with a bunt single and made his way to third on a throwing by Jacob Maekawa. Hoyle came around to score on a Paxton Wallace groundout to make it 5-1.

The Sharks added another in the 8th against the Salamanders bullpen. Zach Bridges led the inning off with a double and then scored on Ben LaSpaluto's two out single to left.

With a 5-2 lead, the Salamanders exploded with four more runs on five hits in the 9th to take a 9-2 lead that put the Sharks away.

In his last two outings against the Sharks, Christian Scafidi was tossed 11 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 5 hits while striking out 16.

Next up, the Sharks face Morehead City at home. First pitch from the Shark Tank is at 7:05 and the gates open at 6. The Sharks Pregame Show begins at 6:50 tomorrow evening and all the action is available here:
