SwampDogs Struggle to Break Through in Morehead City

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It's been a bit of a rollercoaster season for the SwampDogs through 17 games.

At the high point, Fayetteville rolled off three straight victories and seized control of second place in the East Division. Coming into Friday, though, the team had dropped three straight, including a heartbreaker the night before.

Looking to pull off a momentum-changing upset on the road in Morehead City, the SwampDogs were unable to put it all together, falling to the first-place Marlins 5-1.

As has been the case during the past week, Fayetteville was hampered by a lack of scoring, control issues and defensive inconsistency. The one-run performance marked the fifth game in which the Morehead City pitching staff held the SwampDogs to three runs or fewer, and the scoring output was not enough to overcome 10 walks and two errors on defense.

In spite of the final score, the SwampDogs showed some bite Friday, as Fayetteville recorded five hits to the Marlins' three, including two hits by Trent Franson (Houston Baptist). His ninth-inning double, which scored Matthias Carter (Methodist), brought some excitement late in the game. Additionally, the SwampDogs remain in second place in the division and are just a few games below .500 with plenty of summer left.

Fayetteville will look to turn it around Saturday night, when the Holly Springs Salamanders come into town for a cluckin' good time at The Swamp, sponsored by Mountaire Farms.
