Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, NC - Friday night was just one of the nights. One of those nights where nothing went the way the Wilmington Sharks wanted them to in an 8-0 loss to the Holly Springs Salamanders at Buck Hardee Field despite giving up only four base hits. The Sharks fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Javon Fields walked to lead off the game for the Salamanders. He then stole second and advanced to third when Sharks catcher Lucas Oxendine overthrew second base the base on a throwdown. Sharks centerfielder Tucker Greer then overthrew third allowing Fields to score and give the Salamanders the early 1-0 lead.
The Salamanders loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the third by way of two hit batsman and an error. Daniel Leckie drove home a run on an RBI groundout. Another throwing error by Oxendine allowed another run to score. Ryan Guckin followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0 Holly Springs. Guckin then came in to score on a double by Jake Field extending the Salamander lead to 5-0.
The Sharks put a pair of runners in scoring position in both the first and the sixth innings but were never able to get any runs out of it. The Salamanders added an additional three runs in the fifth inning making it 8-0.
The Sharks will be back in action Saturday night for their first road game of the season against the Lexington County Blowfish at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Mike Picollo (UNC Wilmington) will start on the mound for the Sharks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.
The Sharks will return to Buck Hardee Field on Saturday June 8th against the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
The first 500 fans into the stadium will receive a free Sharks hat presented by Pepsi. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
