Sharks Drop Two Close Games on Wednesday Night

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks came up just short in a doubleheader on Thursday night against the Edenton Steamers as the Steamers took game one 1-0 in eight innings and game two 4-3.

The pitchers showed their best stuff from both teams especially in game one. Nick Miller was the starting pitcher in game one he threw seven innings of shutout baseball as he gave up three hits and struck out five. Noah Smallwood threw five innings of scoreless baseball as he gave up one hit and struck out one.

The scoring didn't come until the bottom of the eighth inning when Edenton's Josh Hampton hit a one out double off Stu Jones to get into scoring position. Nick Thompson flew out to right field for the second out of the inning. Adam Kirsch the next batter for Edenton hit a ball down the third base line to score Hampton for the walk off win in game one 1-0.

In game two, the Sharks go out in front first in the bottom of the third inning as Dylan Bosheers led off with a double and eventually scored on a John Fidnaza RBI single to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. In the same inning for Wilmington, with two outs Alex Freedman hit his fourth double of the year to drive in Fidanza to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Edenton answered with two runs as Laz Villa hit a RBI single and Josh Hampton singled to score Villa to tie up the game 2-2. The Sharks answered in the bottom of the fourth, when Andrew Amaro reached safely on a fielder's choice to score Tyler Slaton to give the Sharks a 3-2 lead. Nick Thompson hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning with one out to score Tyler Qualls to tie the game up 3-3.

The Steamers added a run in the top of the seventh inning when Thompson was walked with the bases loaded which scored Qualls to give the Steamers a 4-3 lead and was enough for them to hang on to get the win and improve their record to 19-5. The Sharks move to 12-12 on the year and host Team USA on Thursday night with 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Buck Hardee field.

The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut so far.
