Sharks Drop 8th Straight
June 19, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
The Sharks struggles continued tonight on the road at Holly Springs (5-12). Wilmington (5-11) mustered just one run on five hits in a crushing 10-1 defeat at Ting Park.
It was bad news from the start for the visitors. After a one out single by Paxton Wallace, the next batter grounded into an inning ending double play. It was just the seventh time an opponent had turned two against the Sharks.
In the last of the first, Holly Springs used a couple hits and a stolen base to take a 1-0 advantage. Next at bat for the Sharks went the same way as the first frame. Ayden Karraker singled to lead off the inning, only to see the second end on a 4-6-3 double play. Then again in bottom of the inning, Holly Springs added another run.
From that point hits were at a premium from the Sharks. Ayden Karraker went 2-2 with a double before being replaced by a pinch runner in the fifth as a precaution. Paxton Wallace was 2-4 with an RBI double and the only other hit came from Wil Hoyle in the 6th, who scored on Wallace's double.
The Salamanders offense was clicking, unlike the Sharks. The Salamanders added to its early lead with two runs in both the third in fourth innings. In the fifth, the home was held off the scoreboard as the Sharks made it 6-1 midway through the sixth inning.
Holly Springs would answer and score the game's final four runs including three in the bottom of the seventh.
Both starting pitchers factored into the decision, Mitch Gremling (1-0) earned his first win in five scoreless innings of work. Meanwhile, in his first start of the summer, Eddie Hiott (1-2) lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out two.
The 16 hits allowed by the Sharks were the most this season, topping the 13 hits by Fayetteville on June 3rd.
Wilmington has now lost eight games in a row, the longest losing streak in the Coastal Plain League this summer.
Next up, the Sharks return home to face the Wilson Tobs. First pitch from the Shark Tank is at 7:05 and the gates open at 6. The Sharks Pregame Show begins at 6:50 tomorrow evening and all the action is available here: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/cplsharks/
