SwampDogs Stymied in Morehead City

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Whenever two hot teams meet, someone inevitably has to cool off. The SwampDogs found that out the hard way Monday against Morehead City.
Riding a three-game win streak into a matchup against the first-place Marlins, the SwampDogs could not score enough to offset their defensive struggles, losing 5-2.
The SwampDogs scored once in the third and fourth innings, respectively, using every means necessary to produce against a stingy Marlins pitching staff. Fayetteville's first run Monday night came as a result of an error, a single, a walk and a productive out, with Joey Wiemer (Cincinnati) eventually driving in Javon Martin (Charleston Southern). An inning later, back-to-back doubles by Harry Brown (James Madison) and Trent Franson (Houston Baptist) brought the team their second run of the game.
That said, Fayetteville's pitchers were the biggest positive of the night, proving solid against the Morehead City lineup and keeping the SwampDogs within striking distance throughout the game. Making his debut for Fayetteville, starter Steven Skolarz (Montevallo) allowed two earned runs and struck out three in five innings pitched. Reliever Logan Carter (Middle Georgia State) was also strong out of the bullpen, working three innings and allowing one run while striking out four.
Unfortunately for the SwampDogs, some miscues in the field came back to hurt them, as four errors on the night resulted in two additional runs for the Marlins and proved too much for the team to overcome.
Despite the loss, the SwampDogs are still trending up. Fayetteville has won five out of its last seven and remains in second place in the East Division. The team has a day off Tuesday before squaring off against Holly Springs Wednesday for Disney Night at The Swamp.
