Sharks Add Rookie Wide Receiver

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday that wide receiver Jheranie Boyd has been assigned to the Jacksonville roster on a one-year rookie contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 24-year-old Boyd (6'2", 200) heads to the Arena Football League after stints with several NFL teams, most recently logging time on the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad during the 2013 season. He initially signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft. He then competed in training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, but was waived before the start of the regular season.

Boyd attended the University of North Carolina, where he totaled 44 receptions for 860 yards and 13 touchdowns during his time with the Tar Heels. A deep threat with a nose for the end zone, Boyd led his team with an impressive average of 20.9 yards per reception as a junior in 2011. Boyd also frequently carried the ball on end around plays, totaling 251 yards and a touchdown on 39 rushing attempts over the course of his four-year collegiate career.

A native of Gastonia, North Carolina, Boyd ranked near the top of his recruiting class. He earned spots in both the ESPN.com Top 150 and the Rivals 100, and was considered by several outlets as the No. 3 prospect in the state of North Carolina. In addition to his football prowess, Boyd earned all-state recognition in track and field, excelling as a sprinter in the 100m, the 200m and on relay teams.
