Sharks Activate Defensive Lineman Jerry Turner
March 3, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The four-time South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday that the team has activated defensive lineman Jerry Turner from Refused to Report.
The 35-year-old Turner (6'2", 265) is set for his second season in Jacksonville and eighth campaign in the Arena Football League. The most experienced player on the Sharks' active roster, Turner put together a career year in 2013, earning his first career All-Arena nod as a Second Team selection. Last season, Turner set new personal bests with 14.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks, leading the Sharks in both categories. He also recorded three of the Sharks' five blocked kicks, tied for the team lead with five forced fumbles and tied for second among Shark defenders with four fumble recoveries.
Turner also ranked among the league leaders in multiple categories, finishing third in sacks, tied for third in forced fumbles, tied for third in fumble recoveries and fourth in tackles for loss. Perhaps Turner's most impressive individual performance came in Week 2 at Pittsburgh, when he tied a Jacksonville franchise record with three sacks in a single game. Turner also recorded two sacks in both Week 9 against San Jose and Week 18 at New Orleans.
Turner's extensive AFL career began with the Las Vegas Gladiators in 2003. Before heading to Jacksonville, he also spent time with the Kansas City Brigade (2007-08), Spokane Shock (2010), and Georgia Force (2011-12). Over the course of his time in the AFL, Turner has racked up a total of 124.5 tackles (96 solo), 35 tackles for loss, 30 sacks, 16 forced fumbles and 11 fumble recoveries.
Though he does not have a regular-season interception to his name, Turner capped his 2013 campaign by batting a pass up in the air, pulling it down and running it back for a 23-yard touchdown in the American Conference Championship Game against the Philadelphia Soul.
Turner now joins his younger brother, Jeremiah, on the Sharks' active roster. An AFL rookie, Jeremiah Turner recorded a sack in Sunday's preseason scrimmage against the Tampa Bay Storm.
In other Monday transactions, the Sharks announced that defensive lineman Colton Miles-Nash and offensive lineman Jerry Evans have been placed on reassignment.
