Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The 66ers defeated the High Desert Mavericks 7-4 Thursday night, just one night after the Mavs clinched the Cal League South Division's first half title.
Tim Sexton (2-8, 3.21) earned his first home win since April of 2008 despite allowing a season high 11 hits. Sexton pitched 7 innings, striking out 5 and allowing 3 earned runs to score. Sexton did not walk a single batter Thursday night.
High Desert got off to a strong start against Sexton with a leadoff triple by Jamie McOwen, which extended his hitting streak to a team-record 29 games. Edilio Colina singled to left field to score McOwen and give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead. Colina came around to score on a Travis Scott single to make it 2-0 High Desert.
The 66ers answered with one run in the first inning. Elian Herrera's single to right field was misplayed by Carlos Peguero, allowing Herrera to reach second base. After stealing third, Herrera scored on a Trayvon Robinson groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
High Desert added to their lead in the second, turning Juan Diaz's leadoff triple into a run as Jeffrey Dominguez drove him in with one out to give High Desert a 3-1 lead.
The back-and-forth scoring battle continued through the third inning, as the 66ers scored a pair of runs on wild pitches to tie the game at 3-3.
The 66ers bats came alive in the fifth inning, as Adolfo Gonzalez led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center field. Gonzalez scored shortly after when Justin Fuller hit a triple off the wall in right field to make it 4-3 Inland Empire. A double by Herrera with two outs scored Fuller and gave the 66ers a 5-3 lead.
High Desert cut the 66ers' lead to 5-4 in the 8th inning, but Inland Empire added two runs of insurance to hold on to the victory 7-4. Jake McCarter closed the door on the Mavericks' rally, earning his 5th save of the season by recording the final four outs.
J.C. Ramirez (4-3, 4.54) was tagged for the loss for High Desert giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 5 in 6 innings pitched.
Inland Empire (30-37) will continue the series against the High Desert Mavericks (42-25) on a Toyota of Redlands 50-Cent Friday.
