Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes have announced their 2007 Opening Day roster, which includes a number of former âTopes and several highly-regarded Florida Marlins prospects. The Marlins have also announced a trade that will send first baseman Jason Stokes to the Oakland A's organization in exchange for catcher John Baker.
As Opening Night at Isotopes Park looms on Thursday, the âTopes roster has filled out with several familiar faces, including outfielder Eric Reed, infielders Robert Andino, Todd Sears and Scott Seabol, catchers Chris Ashby and Paul Hoover, and pitchers Jeff Fulchino, Chris George, Nic Ungs and Ross Wolf.
Absent will be Stokes, who the Marlins shipped to Oakland in return for Baker, a left-handed hitting catcher who spent all or part of the last three seasons with Triple-A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League. Stokes was a second round pick by the Marlins in the 2000 draft, and has battled injuries in each of the last two seasons with the âTopes.
Catcher Nick Trzesniak was released upon the acquisition of Baker. His roster spot will be filled by outfielder Chad Hermansen, a former first-round draft pick who has played for four Major League teams.
The Isotopes will feature a strong five-man starting pitching staff to begin 2007. Big right-hander Fulchino and southpaw George will be joined by Wes Obermueller, Australian lefty Paul Mildren and Ricardo Rodriguez.
Fresh off breaking camp in Jupiter, Fla., the âTopes will arrive at the Albuquerque Sunport at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Media Day is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Isotopes Park. Members of the media should enter through McKernan Hall and proceed to the field for the event. Lunch will be served immediately following Media Day.
The âTopes will take the field for the first time on Tuesday, April 3 in an exhibition contest against the University of New Mexico at 6:05 p.m. at Isotopes Park. Albuquerque kicks-off the 2007 regular season on Thursday, April 5 against the Omaha Royals. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at The Lab. A stadium blanket will go to the first 3,000 fans, courtesy of Sandia Resort & Casino.
