Seven-Run Sixth Fuels 'Cats to 11-3 Victory in Game 1 over Danbury

North Adams SteepleCats News Release
DANBURY, Conn. - After watching a four-run lead trimmed to two by host Danbury, visiting North Adams exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth to fuel the SteepleCats to an 11-3 victory in game one of an NECBL Western Division doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Rogers Park.
Looking for the season sweep of Danbury in the nightcap, the SteepleCats (19-17) will also be aiming for the 20-win plateau for the 10th time in the franchise's 12-year history should they win the late game against the Westerners (14-23).
After the visitors backed starter Casey Brown (CCSU) with four runs midway through the game, Danbury responded with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half. But the SteepleCats roared ahead for good with seven runs in the top of the sixth to put it out of reach.
Brown was very effective over five innings except for one brief stretch late in his outing, but it was still good enough for his third win of the year. The southpaw struck out a season-high six while allowing one walk, two runs and five hits, besting counterpart Rob Blanc who yielded 10 hits and 10 runs - four earned - over 5 1/3 innings.
After Brown worked out of a second-and-third, nobody-out jam in the bottom of the second, the SteepleCats responded with the first two runs of the game in the third. Junior Cody Doyle (Cal State L.A.) came through with a bloop single with runners aboard to drive in the first two runs of the contest.
Then, an inning later, freshman Jacob Huckabay (UT-Pan American) became the beneficiary of a dropped foul ball that prolonged the fourth inning. After the error, Huckabay ripped a double down the right field line that scored a run. A batter later, freshman Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) came through with a bloop single to left, giving the 'Cats a 4-0 advantage after four innings of play.
Danbury would respond with two runs against Brown in the bottom of the fifth after Kris Simonton snuck a single into right that scored a pair. But the CCSU southpaw induced a grounder to first base to avoid further trouble.
Right on cue, the 'Cats responded with one of their biggest innings of the season, racking up seven runs on four hits while capitalizing on two errors to grab an 11-2 lead. Sophomore Dominic Severino (CCSU) totaled three RBI in the inning with a single early and a two-RBI double later on, while juniors Joe Landi (URI) and Garrett Tuck (UC San Diego) also forced in runs on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively, and freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine) drove in another by means of a sacrifice fly.
That was more than enough for the SteepleCats the rest of the way, as Danbury mustered just a run in the sixth and that was it, allowing North Adams to claim the victory in the opener.
