Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, N.C - The Edenton Steamers (12-4) used a seven-run fourth inning to walk away with their eighth straight win by a score of 10-5 on Saturday night over the Fayetteville SwampDogs (10-6) at Historic Hicks Field.

Connor Cuff (University of Pennsylvania) made his third start of the season, all of which have been in front of the home crowd at Historic Hicks Field. Toeing the rubber for Fayetteville was lefty Ben Burns, looking for his third win in as many starts.

The Steamers offense wasted no time jumping on Burns, in the bottom of the first Josh Hampton (Wilmington University), who was 0 for his last 12 at the plate, busted out with a two-run home run to straightaway center field for a 2-0 Steamer lead. The long ball was Hampton's second of the year and it gave him 20 RBIs for the season.

Edenton added a run in the second when Tyler Qualls (Louisiana Tech University) was hit by a pitch.

After Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) doubled him to third, he scored on Sam Bumpers (Lamar University) RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Cuff, relinquished three hits in the top of the third and gave up two runs in the frame. With runners at first and second Daniel Nevarez doubled home Michael Timm to make it 3-1 Edenton and Bill Bereszniewicz reached on an infield RBI single to make it 3-2 Steamers.

Edenton, in the bottom of the fourth blew the game wide open against Burns. Hampton led off with a triple and scored on Adam Kirsch's (Texas Tech University) RBI single. After a Qualls single, Bumpers knocked in Kirsch with a single followed by a Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) RBI single. Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) kept his hot hitting going by knocking in two with a single and Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) left the building again to make it 10-2 Steamers.

Burns didn't survive the barrage, pitching three and two-thirds innings and allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, he walked no one and struck no one out.

Fayetteville crept ever closer in the top of the sixth. After a one out double and a walk put two men on, Bereszniewicz picked up an RBI with a single and then John Rooney brought home the fourth run of the ball game for Fayetteville with an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 10-4 Edenton.

Cuff pitched five and two-thirds innings and scattered ten hits, allowing four runs (three earned), he walked two and struck out four, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Fayetteville added a run against Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College) in the top of the seventh. After a single followed by back-to-back walks, Brian Celsi hit a dribbler to short that Delgado couldn't pick up with the bare hand and Timm's scored to make it 10-5.

That was as close as Fayetteville would come as Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) and Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) would both pitch scoreless innings to seal the win for Cuff.

With their eighth straight win, Edenton improves to 12-4 and a two game lead over Fayetteville for first place in the Coastal Plain Leagues East Division. Edenton travels to Morehead City tomorrow night for their first contest with the Marlins.

The Steamers had five players with two hits in the game and eight of nine Steamer starters hit safely in the contest. Six different Steamers had an RBI and Edenton only stranded two base runners, tying their season low.
