Pilots Top Marlins 3-0

Hampton, VA - Despite outhitting the Peninsula Pilots 6-3, the Morehead City Marlins ran in to some terrific pitching from the Peninsula Pilots in Hampton, NJ on Saturday night as they fell to the Peninsula Pilots by a score of 3-0.

The Pilots didn't waste any time taking the lead as they scored one run in the home half of the first inning. Peninsula centerfielder Bill Cullen was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game then went all the way to third when Brandon Reitano reached on a throwing error in the very next at bat. Cullen then scored on a wild pitch, giving the Pilots a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning.

Peninsula added another run in the third as Cullen scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of Reitano. Cullen was able to score from third on the sacrifice fly, because he tripled down the right field line.

The Pilots picked up their third, and final run, of the night on a fly ball to left field that was misjudged. Tyler Urps scored all the way from first on the fly ball to left field, giving Peninsula the 3-0 advantage heading to the top half of the eighth.

Jacob Hoyle suffered his first loss of the season for the Marlins, despite a solid effort over three innings. Cole Billingsley and Kyle Weary combined for two shutout innings, while William Prince allowed just one run over three innings on the bump for the Marlins. T.J. Rinoski got the win with five shutout innings; while Josh Heddinger picked up the five inning save with a solid effort on the bump for the Pilots.

The Marlins head back to Morehead City, NC tonight and will face the Edenton Steamers on Sunday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM on Father's Day.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
