Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays used a seven-run fourth inning to break Tuesday night's game open as they beat the Jamestown Jammers, 11-2, at Diethrick Park.
After the Jammers cut the Auburn deï¬Âcit to one in the bottom of the third inning, the ï¬Ârst seven Auburn batters reached and scored in the fourth inning to quash any hopes of a second Jamestown comeback in as many nights. The loss drops the Jammers (34-36) back to two games below .500 with ï¬Âve games left in the season.
Austin Barnes paced the Jamestown offense with two hits and a RBI as the Jammers were held to just six singles Tuesday night.
The Doubledays showed no ill effects from Monday night's Jamestown rally as they jumped on the scoreboard ï¬Ârst with a pair of runs in the second inning.
Hendry Jimenez ripped a double, and Billy Burns walked before the pair come into score on a single by Wilfri Pena.
In the third, Auburn struck for another run on a Russell Moldenhauer sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây to make it 3-0.
However, the Jammers used some two-out lightning in the bottom of the frame to get back into the contest.
Nestor Castillo singled and stole second, and Ryan Goetz walked to start the rally. Then, Barnes and Brian McConkey had back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-2.
That would be as close as the Jammers would get as Auburn broke the game open in the fourth.
Billy Burns started the scoring with a RBI double. Caleb Ramsey followed with a one-run single, and a passed ball and wild pitch allowed two more runs to score. Then, Matt Skole had a RBI single before Justin Miller delivered the knock-out blow with a two-run homer to left.
Jamestown had opportunities to chip away at the lead in the sixth and seventh but failed to capitalize on the chances to get back in the game.
In the ninth, Auburn tacked on one more run on a Jimenez ground out to end any hope of a miraculous rally.
Wirkin Estevez earned the win for the Doubledays as he went ï¬Âve innings, gave up four hits and two earned runs and struck out two.
Helpi Reyes took the loss for the Jammers. He went three innings and allowed eight runs.
Offensively, Miller paced the Doubledays with three hits, including the two-run homer, and two runs scored. Bryce Ortega contributed a single, double and two runs, and Pena added a pair of hits.
The two teams now head to Auburn for two more games before the Jammers return home Friday to wrap up the 2011 season with a three-game series against Mahoning Valley.
