
Seven Run Fifth Gives Vipers Game, Series Against Victoria

The Calgary Vipers broke open a tie game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the Victoria Seals 12-7 before 1859 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 3-0 after the first inning the Vipers crawled back to tie the game in the third and in the fifth frame scored seven times for ten runs in total scored unanswered. With the victory the Snakes are now 16-8 in the second half and lead the North Division by three and a half games. Overall the Vipers are 42-21 for the top record in the Golden Baseball League.
At the plate birthday boy Rick Guarno led the way going four-for-five with four runs scored while Drew Miller and Colin Moro both knocked in three runs each.
Erik Dessau (7-3) threw five innings for the win giving up three runs while not walking a batter. Mac Suzuki was once again brilliant out of the bullpen throwing a three-up, three-down ninth frame with one strikeout. James Garcia (3-3) received the loss in giving up ten runs in four and two-third innings.
Victoria picked up right where they left off last night as in the top of the first inning Sergio Pedroza singled, Jamar Hill hit a two-run shot, and Josh Arhart made it back-to-back home runs for a 3-0 advantage.
Celebrating his 27th birthday Guarno led off the bottom of the second for Calgary with his ninth home run of the year for a 3-1 score.
The Vipers tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning as Moro doubled, Raul Gonzalez walked, Guarno singled to load the bases, and with two outs Kevin Price cashed in two runs with a clutch double.
Calgary blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth as Gonzalez walked, Guarno reached on an error, Miller singled in one, Price was intentionally walked, Ivan Reyes knocked in one with a fielder's choice, and both Jorge Mejia and Dillon O'Krane collected RBI singles for four runs in total. Moro followed by capping the seven run inning with a three-run shot for his eighth big fly of the season and a 10-3 advantage.
In the visitor's half of the sixth frame Josh Arhart singled, Brian Rios reached on an error, and Brett Flowers doubled in both for a 10-5 score.
Victoria got within three runs at 10-7 in the top of the eighth inning as with two outs Flowers, Billy Krause, and Petie Montero all hit doubles to plate two runs.
The Snakes grabbed those two runs right back in the bottom half for a 12-7 lead as Gonzalez and Guarno singled and both scored on a Miller two-run double.
The Vipers now hit the road for a week starting tomorrow, Monday August 17th at 7:00 PM MDT in Edmonton against the Capitals with Reggie Rivard (3-3) on the mound for Calgary. The final three games of this four-game-set will be played on Tuesday August 18th, Wednesday August 19th both at 7:00 PM MDT, and Thursday August 20th at 12:00 PM. The Snakes will then travel to Victoria for a three game series against the Seals on Friday August 21st, Saturday August 22nd both at 8:05 PM MDT, and Sunday August 23rd at 2:35 PM MDT.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Tuesday August 25th, Wednesday August 26th, and Thursday August 27th all at 7:05 PM MDT for their final regular season home games of the season with the Edmonton Capitals in town. Tuesday will be "Toque Night" where Vipers' toques will be handed out at the game while on Wednesday it will be "Grey Eagle Casino Night" at the ballpark.
For the third straight year the Vipers have qualified for the playoffs and will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
