Victoria Seals News Release
Calgary, AB - Looking to grab a win in their final appearance at Foothills Stadium this season, the Victoria Seals took on the Calgary Vipers in game three on Sunday afternoon. With the Vipers turning to Erik Dessau (6-3) in the series finale, the Seals handed the ball to James Garcia (3-2) in the matinee rubber match.
Bursting out of the gate in the top of the first inning, the Seals received a single from Sergio Pedroza before Jamar Hill cranked his league-leading 17th home run of the season for a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Josh Arhart, then lifted Victoria to a three run advantage with a solo home run of his own.
Earning one run back in the bottom of the second, the Vipers got on the board when Rick Guarno powered his ninth home run of the year over the left field fence to make the score 3-1. Tying the game in the third inning, designated hitter Kevin Price came up with a clutch bases-loaded double to score Colin Moro and Raul Gonzalez with Calgary's third hit of the inning.
The Vipers then kicked down the door in the bottom of the fifth when Gonzalez drew a walk before Guarno reached on an error and Drew Miller gave the home side the lead with a base hit. Then, after Price was intentionally walked to set up a double play opportunity, Ivan Reyes knocked in one with a fielder's choice, and a pair of singles from Jorge Mejia and Dillon O'Krane posted two more runs. Capping off a seven-run inning and chasing Garcia from the game, Colin Moro hit a three-run bomb for a 10-3 lead on 10 unanswered Calgary runs.
Providing a response in the top of the sixth, Arhart notched a base hit and Brian Rios reached on an error to set up a two-run double off the bat of Brett Flowers to pull the Seals back within five runs. Victoria then made things interesting with another pair of runs in the eighth, using three straight two-out doubles from Flowers, Billy Krause, and Petie Montero for a 10-7 score.
Calgary answered right back in the bottom of the frame, though, collecting singles from Gonzalez and Guarno before Miller stretched the Vipers lead back to five runs with a double to the wall. Handing the ball to Mac Suzuki in the top of the ninth, the right-hander finished off a 12-7 Calgary win, handing the home side their fifth win against the Seals in the last six days.
Erik Dessau earned his seventh win of the season with five innings worked, while James Garcia takes the loss despite allowing just three earned runs of the 10 surrendered while he was on the mound. Celebrating his birthday, Rick Guarno had a marquee afternoon for the Vipers, going 4-for-5 with an RBI while both Colin Moro and Drew Miller collected 3 RBI's for the home side. Brett Flowers was again strong for the Seals, posting a 3-for-4 outing, along with 2 RBI's in a losing effort.
