Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

With the start of the 2008 major league season getting underway earlier in the week, seven former Missoula Osprey players find themselves on major league rosters. The Diamondbacks' roster includes pitcher Tony Pena and catcher Miguel Montero. Lyle Overbay is the everyday first baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays, Jose Valverde, who was traded by Arizona to Houston in the off-season is the new closer for the Astros, Scott Hairston is a starting outfielder for the San Diego Padres, Dustin Nippert was traded to Texas just prior to the season and is coming out of the bullpen for the Rangers and Duaner Sanchez is a reliever for the New York Mets.

Pena (2002) will start the season as the Diamondbacks setup man to closer Brandon Lyon, but could find himself in the closers role himself this season. Pena is 8-8 with a 3.75 ERA and three saves in his major league career.

Montero spent parts of 2002 and 2003 in Missoula and is projected to split time at catcher with Chris Snyder once he returns from the disabled list. The left-hander played in 109 games in an Osprey uniform and is a career .226 hitter with 10 homeruns and 40 RBIs in 90 big league games.

In all, 15 former Osprey have reached the major leagues since the club moved to Missoula in 1999. The other eight that are not on an opening day 25-man roster include; Emilio Bonifacio, J.D. Closser, Jorge De La Rosa, Luis Terrero, Casey Daigle, Doug Devore, Andy Green, and Jerry Gil.
