Edmonton Trappers News Release
EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trappers Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Seung Song has been placed on the disabled list with a broken right distal radius. Song, 2-1, 4.02 (31.1 IP - 14 ER) in seven starts so far this season, broke his arm while sliding into second base attempting to break up a double play in Sunday's game in Portland. In addition right-handed pitcher Chris Schroder has been transferred to the club from Double-A Harrisburg. Schroder should be available out of the bullpen on Tuesday as the Trappers host the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus two players (right-hander Seung Song and infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.
Song, 23, was the Trappers Opening Day starter on April 8 against the Sacramento River Cats and began the season rated by Baseball America as the eight-best prospect in the Montreal Expos farm system. Song split the 2003 season, his first in the Expos system, between Harrisburg and Edmonton, going 5-2, 2.35 (72.2 IP - 19 ER) in 13 starts with the Senators and 7-2, 3.79 (73.2 IP - 31 ER) in 13 starts with the Trappers. His combined 3.08 ERA (146.1 IP - 50 ER) was the fifth lowest in the Expos chain last season. Song was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Boston Red Sox on February 2, 1999 and was traded by the Red Sox to the Expos with right-handed pitcher Sun Woo Kim in exchange for outfielder Cliff Floyd on July 30, 2002. He began the 2004 season with a 37-22 career record and a 2.89 ERA (510.2 IP - 164 ER) in 96 minor league appearances (92 starts).
Schroder, 25, began the season with Harrisburg, the Double-A affiliate of the Expos. The native of Okarche, Oklahoma was 1-0, 2.61 (10.1 IP - 3 ER) with three saves in nine appearances with the Senators, before being promoted. Schroder spent the entire 2003 campaign with Harrisburg, going 9-2 with a 2.84 ERA (82.1 IP - 26 ER) and four saves in 49 appearances. He began his minor league career with Vermont in the New York-Penn League after being selected out of Oklahoma City University in the 19th round of the 2001 draft. Schroder has spent his entire career in the Expos organization and was 13-7 with a 2.26 ERA (167.0 IP - 42 ER) and 22 saves in 115 minor league appearances entering the 2004 season.
The next Trapper home game will be on Tuesday, May 11 when the club will take on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The game will begin at 7:05 PM. Tickets for all regular season home games are on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 451-8000.
