Services For Joe Gates Announced

GARY, Ind. - Services to honor the life of former Chicago White Sox infielder and Gary SouthShore RailCats coach Joe Gates will be held over two days, April 5-6 in Gates' lifelong home of Gary.

An open viewing will be held Monday, April 5 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. at Powell-Coleman Funeral Home in Gary, with the Gates family arriving at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, Gates funeral will begin at 11 a.m. at the Genesis Convention Center following a two-hour wake. A repass will follow the funeral at U. S. Steel Yard, and all events are open to the public.

Gates passed away earlier this week at age 55, and is survived by 12 brothers and sisters and three children. A graduate of Gary's Roosevelt High School, Gates played for the White Sox from 1978-79 and was a RailCats coach for seven seasons, beginning with the opening of U. S. Steel Yard in 2003. Gates also served as the head baseball coach at Gary's Wirt High School for 28 years.
