Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Back from a six game road trip, the Victoria Seals marked their return to Royal Athletic Park with game one of a three game series against the Chico Outlaws on Friday night. With the visitors sending Evan White (4-6) to the mound in their debut in Victoria, the Seals handed the ball to Javier Garcia (2-6) for the start.
Following a scoreless first two frames, the Seals opened the scoring with a bang in the bottom of the third. After Gabriel Riley led the inning off with a walk, and Wilver Perez put runners on first and third with a fielder's choice, Sergio Pedroza launched a home run to straight-away centrefield to move into a tie for the league lead and hand the home side a 3-0 lead.
Then, after three straight walks from Garcia translated into a run for the Outlaws in the top of the fifth, Victoria stretched their advantage once more in the bottom of the frame. A lead-off single from Bret LeVier set up another fielder's choice to Perez, an RBI double from Pedroza made the score 4-1. A string of three straight singles from Brian Rios, Brett Flowers and Matt Kavanaugh then added another pair of runs for the Seals, before a balk against reliever Blake Cull brought home Victoria's fourth run of the frame for a 7-1 score.
With Chico earning another run back following a base hit from Dale Swinford in the top of the sixth, a lead-off walk to Perez then set up another Seals' run, when the Victoria second basemen stole home after a pop-out to restore a six-run advantage.
The home side would then put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the eighth inning, using a sacrifice fly from Riley to cash Kavanaugh before LeVier lifted a solo home run over the left centrefield fence to put the Seals up 10-2. With Eduardo Baeza posting a strong showing in relief, Victoria handed the ball to Ethan Katz for a three-up, three-down top of the ninth inning to secure the series opener against the Outlaws, a 10-2 final.
Despite cruising through four innings of work, Javier Garcia hands the win to Eduardo Baeza after leaving with an injury in the top of the fifth, while Evan White takes the loss for Chico. Sergio Pedroza remained scorching hot for the Seals, picking up his 12th RBI in the last four games while finishing 2-for-3 on the night.
The Seals now prepare for game two, hoping to clinch the season series against the Outlaws tomorrow night, Coca-Cola Cowbell Night at Royal Athletic Park. Game one time is 7:05 p.m. (PT), and tickets are still available at www.selectyourtickets.com. The contest will also be broadcast live at www.victoriaseals.ca.
