
Sergent Pitches Vipers to Series Lead

The Calgary Vipers got great pitching and 19 hits en route to a 15-4 victory over the Edmonton Capitals before 2847 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With the victory the Vipers take a 1-0 lead in the best of five North Division Championship Series. Joe Sergent (1-0) pitched beautifully for the Vipers throwing seven innings and scattering six hits while allowing four runs. In the first inning Edmonton loaded the bases but Sergent didn't give up a run and went on to collect three one-two-three innings in his next six frames.
Out of the bullpen Travis Hughes pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout while Brian Oliver tossed a three-up, three-down ninth frame. Lou Pote (0-1) took the loss in giving up 13 hits and eight runs in four innings.
At the plate Sergio Pedroza led the way going three-for-five with a home run and five runs batted in. Drew Miller also had a fine night going three-for-five with a home run, three runs batted in and two score while Nelson Castro was three-for-six with three runs both scored and batted in.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Castro singled and Pedroza, who led the league with 20 home runs, hit a two-run shot. Kit Pellow followed with a walk, Wilver Perez singled, and Miller lined a opposite field three-run long ball for a 5-0 lead.
Edmonton got a couple runs back in the bottom of the frame as Kevin House, Darryl Brinkley, and Joey Gomes all singed for one run and Jose Morban plated a second tally with a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 score.
The Vipers put up another big inning in the fifth as Rick Guarno doubled, Jorge Mejia singled, Fehlandt Lentini walked to load the bases, Castro drove in two with a double, and Pellow also cashed two with a single for a four-run inning and a 9-2 advantage.
The Capitals got a run back in the bottom of the frame as House doubled, stole third base, and scored on a Brinkley sacrifice fly for a 9-3 game.
In the home half of the sixth Edmonton got another run for a 9-4 score as Chad Ehrnsberger walked, Joe Jiannetti doubled, and Aaron Hornostaj collected a run batted in with a groundout.
Calgary blew the game wide open in the top of the eighth as Miller and Colin Moro walked, Guarno plated a run with a double, Mejia singled home one, Raul Gonzalez walked to load the bases, Castro reached on an error for a RBI, and Pedroza cleared the sacks with a three-run double for a six run inning and a 15-4 lead.
Game 2 of the N.D.C.S will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday September 2nd at 7:00 PM MDT. Isaac Hess (9-2, 4.59) will take to the mound for the Vipers against Jose Lima (6-7, 3.95) of the Capitals. Hess finished the year first in the league in strikeouts (99), third in wins, and 16th in earned run average. Lima meanwhile was tenth in both E.R.A. and strikeouts (67) while 14th in victories.
The Vipers host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. Evan Greusel (6-3, 6.81) will start for the Snakes against Chris Little (7-3, 5.06) of Edmonton.
If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be held in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT.
