September 2, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers got fantastic pitching from Isaac Hess and Mac Suzuki to defeat the Edmonton Capitals 7-3 before 3211 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With the victory the Vipers take a 2-0 lead in the best of five North Division Championship Series. Hess (1-0) pitched brilliantly for the Vipers throwing six innings and allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven for the win. Suzuki (1) meanwhile threw three innings for the save and allowed only one hit while striking out three.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Capitals put the first two runners on against Hess but he was able to strike out two and then with the bases loaded get a fly out to end the frame scoreless. In the bottom of the seventh Edmonton had another great chance to score as Suzuki entered the game with the tying runs on base and with the bases loaded and one out the Vipers closer was able to record a strikeout and fly out to protect his team's two-run lead.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jorge Cortes and Kevin House hit back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 advantage.

Calgary responded in the next half inning with three straight singles from Wilver Perez, Drew Miller, and Colin Moro to tie the game. Rick Guarno followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt and Jorge Mejia gave his team a 2-1 lead with a run batted in groundout.

The Vipers added a run in the top of the third frame as Nelson Castro singled and Sergio Pedroza nailed a RBI doubled for a 3-1 advantage.

Another tally was added to the lead in the fourth inning as Guarno singled, Mejia reached on a fielder's choice, and with two outs Fehlandt Lentini doubled in a run for a 4-1 score.

In the bottom of the seventh the Capitals plated a run for a 4-2 game as Chad Ehrnsberger singled, Joe Jiannetti reached on a throwing error, and Aaron Hornostaj knocked in one with a base hit.

Calgary got that run right back in the next half inning as Perez reached on a fielding error, stole second base, advanced to third on a Miller deep fly out, and scored on a clutch two out RBI single from Moro for a 5-2 advantage.

Edmonton closed the lead for a second time to two runs in the home half of the eighth as Jose Morban hit a solo home run for a 5-3 score.

The Snakes added two insurance runs in the ninth inning as Mejia laid down a perfect bunt single, moved up to second base on a Lentini groundout, Castro was intentionally walked, Raul Gonzalez delivered a RBI single, and Kit Pellow cashed a second run with a sacrifice fly for a 7-3 lead.
