Caps Drop Game One

September 2, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Capitals took a tough loss in Game One of the North Division Series on Monday night at TELUS Field. Calgary jumped out to a commanding lead of 9-2 by the fifth inning and never looked back. The Vipers added another six runs in the eighth and took the game 15-4.

Lou Pote (0-1) started on the mound for the Capitals and worked his way out of trouble on a number of occasions, but could not withstand the constant Viper attack. Four Calgary batters had at least three hits on the night and centerfielder Sergio Pedroza drove in five runs to lead all hitters.

Joe Sergent (1-0) received the win for the Vipers after seven innings of work. The Calgary starter scattered six hits and four runs in his appearance. Caps hitters had a tough time keeping the ball out of air against Sergent, popping-up or flying out on nine of the first twelve outs, which did not allow for the advancement of many base runners.

Caps rightfielder Kevin House led the home team with three hits and also threw out a Calgary runner attempting to score from second base. Darryl Brinkley also had an outfield assist on a similar play that kept Calgary off the board early.

Wednesday night will mark the return of Lima Time to TELUS Field as fan favourite Jose Lima takes the mound for the Capitals. The 7:00pm start will be the final game of this series at TELUS Field. Game Three will be played in Calgary on Friday at 7:05pm. Games Four and Five will also be held at Calgary's Foothills Stadium, if necessary.

Great seats are still available for Game Two of the North Division Series and may be purchased at the Capitals TELUS Field Box Office, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
