Senyshyn, Team ODHA Wins the 2013 U16 OHL Gold Cup

Six members of #HoundPower 2013 Draft Class have just compled a weekend at the U16 OHL Cup in Kitchener, ON.

COLTON WHITE (Team Alliance), AUSTIN CHO (Team GTHL Red), JUSTIN FREGONA (Team GTHL Red), JAKE BEHSE (Team HNO Yellow), BLAKE SPEERS (Team NOHA Green) and ZACH SENYSHYN (Team ODHA Maroon) took part in the eight team tournament.

KITCHENER, ON: The 2013 U16 OHL Gold Cup has come to an end with Team ODHA winning the first ever, U16 OHL Gold Cup in a victory over Team GTHL Royal Blue.

Team HNO pulled out a 3-2 (OT) overtime victory over Team NOHA on a clutch goal by Trevor Kavanaugh in the Consolation Bronze Game. Kavanaugh was all over the ice for Team HNO, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Team HNO's Brandon Bodnar stopped 37 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Kevin Labelle made 28 saves for Team NOHA on 31 shots. NOHA's BLAKE SPEERS took home the Player of the Game Award along with HNO's Zachary Grezelewski. Team OMHA White, which led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Team OMHA Black and clinched a 4-2 victory in Consolation Gold Game. The largest advantage in the game came when Team OMHA White's Austin Gerhart's scored at 16:03 in the first period to put Team OMHA White up 3-0.

Team OMHA White stifled Team OMHA Black's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Adam Craievich was awarded Player of the Game for Team OMHA White along with Team OMHA Black's Michael Davies. Team GTHL Red fell to Team ALLIANCE after 5 minutes of over time and then a shootout; the final score was 3-2 in the Silver Game. Team ALLIANCE kept Team GTHL Red's goalie busy throughout the game, as Troy Timpano made 45 saves on 48 shots. Team ALLIANCE's starting goalie, Justin Fazio, made 14 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Brendan Johnston, who stopped 12 shots. Ryan Ngan took home the Player of the Game Award for Team GTHL Red while Noah Carroll was honoured with the Award for Team ALLIANCE.

Team ODHA had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-2 win over Team GTHL Royal in the Gold Cup Game. Ian Johnston had a great game for Team ODHA, netting two goals. Team ODHA kept Team GTHL Royal's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeremy Helvig made 37 saves on 43 shots. Team GTHL Royal was helped by Eric Eremita, who grabbed one goal. Eric Eremita was awarded Player of the Game for Team GTHL Royal Blue along with Team ODHA's ZACH SENYSHYN (highlighted in photo above).

U16 OHL GOLD CUP EVENT:

The U16 OHL Gold Cup is an annual event created to feature Ontario's top Under-16 talent. This event will not only showcase Ontario's talent, but is an evaluation and selection process for the Team Ontario. The top 68 players from the U16 OHL Gold Cup will attend the Under-17 Team Ontario Camp where the Team Ontario Staff will select 22 players to represent Ontario at the World Under-17 Challenge held annually in December. With eight teams and 160 players representing the ALLIANCE, GTHL, HNO, NOHA, ODHA and OMHA, the future of Canadian hockey is on display during the 20 games of the OHL Gold Cup.
