Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Louisville, KY) - Louisville right-fielder Steve Selsky drove home three runs in regulation then scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on Eugenio Suarez's walk-off RBI double as the Bats bested the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-5, Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field in the opener of a four-game series.
Selsky went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a walk, and led off the 10th with an opposite-field double to right against Pawtucket's Heath Hembree (0-2). After a sacrifice bunt, Suarez drove a ball off the warning track in right to end the game. It was Pawtucket's second-straight loss in extra innings and fourth in the last seven days.
The PawSox rallied to tie the game with two outs in the ninth for the second game in a row, as Quintin Berry's clutch RBI single to center brought home Garin Cecchini against Louisville's Carlos Contreras. Pawtucket erupted for 14 hits and received eight walks but stranded 15 runners on base, all in the first nine innings.
The PawSox scored four times against Bats starter Dylan Axelrod, who allowed 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, highlighted by a three-run third inning rally that put the visitors in front 3-2. Rusney Castillo (RBI double), Allen Craig (RBI single) and Bryce Brentz (RBI single) all drove home runs in the inning.
Pawtucket starter Jess Todd allowed two runs in the first, then single tallies in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Selsky's two-out RBI single in the fifth put Louisville ahead 4-3, but Jeff Bianchi's RBI hit in the sixth chased Axelrod and tied the score at 4.
Selsky struck again with two outs in the seventh, this time greeting reliever Jonathan Aro with an RBI hit to right. Todd was charged with that run as he allowed a two-out double to former PawSox Ivan De Jesus, Jr. before Aro entered the contest. The starter pitched 6.2 innings and allowed nine hits and five runs. Aro worked the next 2.1 frames without allowing a run before Hembree entered in the 10th.
Drew Hayes (2-1), Louisville's fifth pitcher of the night, earned the win with a scoreless top of the 10th. Craig and Cecchini each collected three of Pawtucket's 14 hits, while Selsky had three of the Bats' 13 knocks.
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 6:35pm first pitch on Friday night. Right-hander Keith Couch (1-5, 4.87) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Bats counter with righty Manny Parra on an MLB rehab assignment (0-0, 0.00). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
Pawtucket will return home on Memorial Day Monday, May 25th to begin a six-game homestand against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Louisville. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
