Sellout Crowd Enjoys 4th of July Fireworks & Win
July 5, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA -The late Norman Rockwell would be hard pressed to top Wednesday night at Avista Stadium. On a picturesque evening celebrating our nation's independence, the Indians painted a masterpiece, defeating the Yakima Bears 2-0 in front of 6,884 fans for 4th of July Fireworks presented by Xfinity & 103.1 KCDA.
Third baseman Ryan Rua got the celebration going early with a home run over the S-R Media sign in the second inning, giving Spokane a 2-0 lead that would be more than enough for their pitching staff.
Indians ace Abel De Los Santos (3-1) shined in front of the packed house, befuddling the hapless Bears for five scoreless frames with a dizzying array of changeups and curveballs. Cody Kendall kept Yakima off the board in the sixth and seventh innings, and Josh McElwee picked up his second save of the season as Royce Bolinger nailed Wagner Mateo at the plate for a game-ending double play.
Leadoff man Chris Garia went 3-4 to raise his average to .303, and Rua, Barrett Serrato, Cam Schiller, and Patrick Cantwell all picked up hits in the win.
Indians players wore special red, white, and blue American Flag jerseys which were auctioned off to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Before tonight's game the Spokane Indians hosted the 4th of July 5K Pennant Run presented by Papa Murphy's, which also raised money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
