June 21, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston RiverDogs third baseman/left fielder Rob Segedin has been promoted to the High-A Tampa Yankees, the New York Yankees announced on Tuesday.
Segedin earns the call up to Tampa after a torrid first half in which he compiled a .323 batting average, good for sixth in the South Atlantic League. A third round pick of the Yankees out of Tulane University in the 2010 draft, Segedin also slugged five home runs, 15 doubles and three triples, and racked up 34 RBI, while scoring another 33 runs.
The Old Tappan, New Jersey native was particularly good in the month of June, hitting .448 (26-for-58) with two home runs and 11 RBI. Segedin had also made strides in the field at the hot corner, while showing his versatility by making 15 starts in left field.
In two related moves, right-handed pitcher Richard Martinez was transferred to the Staten Island Yankees, and fellow righty Corey Maines was promoted from Staten Island to take his place.
Martinez had struggled in 11 games (one start) with the RiverDogs, going 0-2 with an 11.29 ERA. The 22-year old Venezuelan enjoyed success in the NYPL last year, posting a 4-1 mark with a miniscule 1.69 ERA.
Maines made one appearance with Staten Island before the move, surrendering three runs in 0.2 innings pitched. The Houston, Texas native starred at Illinois State before being tabbed by New York in the 23rd round of this June's draft.
The RiverDogs enjoy a three-day respite for the SAL All-Star break before beginning the second half with a four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday, June 23, at 7:05 p.m.
