Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

For the second straight night the Ice Flyers won a 5-4 contest via shootout, this evening against Columbus. In his only two games with Pensacola, Matt Whitehead has twice buried the shootout-winning goal to clinch victory. Yet the game started in Columbus' favor.

Columbus jumped ahead early when Tim Green sent the puck into the net 13:43 in the first period. Craig Stahl and Nicolas Boucher were credited with assists on the play. Yet Pensacola pulled even in the second period.

After the first intermission, the Ice Flyers tied it up at 6:44. Teddy Bears flew onto the ice as part of the Teddy Bear toss when Chris Rebernik scored goal number 11 of the year. Matt Whitehead and Jeff Zatorski assisted on the power play goal in the second intermission. Play was halted as team officials and players corralled Teddy Bears into bags. After the hiatus, the puck dropped again, but the second period would expire with the score still tied at one.

The Ice Flyers opened the floodgates to start the third period, scoring three goals in the first five minutes. Lorne Misita scored a power play goal at 1:15, Chris Rebernik scored his second goal at 3:28, and Misita scored HIS second goal unassisted and shorthanded at 4:52. Galan assisted on the first Misita goal, while Hansberry and Zatorski helped out on Rebernik's second score.

With the Ice Flyers leading 4-1, Columbus started crawling back. Sam Bowles took a pass from Johnson and propelled the puck past goalie Gilbert at 17:37. With the clock running down in regulation, Boucher scored on assists by Dwyer and Leslie to bring the Cottonmouths within one. The game seemed wrapped up by Pensacola, but Jesse Cole had other ideas.

With just seven seconds remaining in regulation Jesse Cole found a rebound right in front of the net. With a flash of Cole's blade the puck was in the net, and the game went into overtime.

Five minutes elapsed without a goal, and both teams setup their top guns for the shootout. Both Bowles and Campbell missed in round one. Hergott made his attempt for Columbus in the second round, but Monte missed. Gilbert denied Lind, while Rebernik added a shootout goal to his two regulation scores. Not to be outdone, Misita was successful on his approach while Martens was not. Green made his shot in round five, setting up Whitehead. The newest Ice Flyer delivered for the second night in a row, and the Ice Flyers had a 5-4 win.

Pensacola will take to the ice again on December 26 when they host the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05. After the game, fans can enjoy a free autograph session with the Ice Flyers.
