Mississippi RiverKings News Release
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Knoxville Ice Bears (8-8-1) got out to an early lead, but a three-goal second period propelled the Mississippi RiverKings (13-6-2) to their second straight victory over the Ice Bears with a 5-2 win.
Knoxville jumped out to an early lead just under five minutes into the action. Jon Higgins' shot shorthanded beat Matt Krahn to give the Ice Bears an early 1-0 lead they took into the first intermission.
In the second, the RiverKings took control. Todd Hosmer's 16th goal of the season tied the game at the 9:27 mark after Leo Thomas' diving effort kept the puck inside of the offensive zone. Two minutes later, Matt Whitehead's shot beat Bryan Hince glove side to give the visitors their first lead of the night. The RiverKings increased their lead to two on Mike Hayward's second goal in as many nights, this one a one-time slap shot on the power play to give the RiverKings a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
The third period saw Knoxville cut their deficit to one on Eric Satim's one-timer in front of Krahn to cut the RiverKings' lead to 3-2.
But the RiverKings did not waste any time getting back. Just 1:04 later, Charles Lachance took an outlet pass from the RiverKings zone and took a shot that beat Hince high to give the RiverKings their two-goal lead back. Todd Hosmer added his second goal of the game for insurance, on the power play, from Mike Grace to give the RiverKings their second win in as many nights over the Ice Bears 5-2.
Matt Krahn (7-1-2) stopped 21 of 23 shots against in the win. Bryan Hince (8-6-2) took the loss after turning aside 22 of 27 shots against.
The RiverKings hit the ice on Thursday, December 26 in Biloxi against the Mississippi Surge at 7:05 p.m. with all the action airing live on Sports 56 and 87.7FM.
