Seattle U Sends Two to Wenatchee
WENATCHEE, Wash. - After having a catcher from Seattle U on the roster a year ago, the AppleSox will try their hand with two Redhawk aces this summer, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.
Chris Carns, a freshman right-hander and Justin Marsden, a high school arm, are the two newest faces to join the 2015 club.
Carns, a native of Federal Way, Wash., will help anchor the AppleSox bullpen in 2015. He played high school baseball at Decatur High School.
"I got a chance to talk to coach Elliott Cribby about him," Proszek said. "He had nothing but great things to say about Chris. He's a great, quality kid and pitcher. He works hard and has a chance to be an upper-80s, low-90s arm for Seattle and is going to be a quality arm in their bullpen. I'm looking forward to working with him."
Carns held a perfect record atop the hill for the Decatur Gators during his senior season.
He went 8-0 en route to an All-Conference selection, while the Gators placed fifth in the WIAA 3A state baseball tournament.
He owns a 3.24 ERA in 8 appearances for the Redhawks this season. In his first year of college baseball, he has thrown 8 1/3 innings, and surrendered only 3 earned runs. He has a 6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Marsden, a native of Auburn, Wash., will join the AppleSox out of high school. He current plays at Auburn Mountainview High School.
"Justin will be another young arm for us," Proszek said. "Hopefully he will bring some added energy to our bullpen. It's helpful that he has a teammate coming from the D-I level because this year we have a couple more guys from D-II, high school, or that are transferring on our roster. I'm excited to coach him."
Last season, Marsden threw a team-best 58 innings and struck out 73 batters while walking only 31. He gave up 37 runs, but only 17 were earned on 42 hits.
Marsden's 2015 high school season opens Saturday, March 4.
Wenatchee opens its season with a two-game nonleague series against the San Francisco Seals, June 4-5, at Paul Thomas Sr. Field. Tickets can be purchased by calling 509-665-6900, or by visiting: http://www.applesox.com/tickets/
