Seattle Sounders FC News Release

Steve Zakuani's second-half strike was not enough for the Seattle Sounders FC to earn points on the road as it lost, 1-3, to the L.A. Galaxy in front of a sellout crowd of 27,000 in the Independence Day game at the Home Depot Center.

Seattle (4-8-3, 15 points) remains seventh in the Western Conference as it has lost three consecutive games for the first time.

The Galaxy (11-1-3, 36 points) ended a two-game winless streak and stand nine points clear of Real Salt Lake in the West.

In the 66th minute, Zakuani took a ball from Fredy Montero, split the Galaxy defense and slid a shot into the side netting for his fifth goal of the season.

Sounders FC were previously unbeaten (5-0-3) when Zakuani scored.

It was Montero's sixth assist of the season, which is tied for third in MLS.

Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle connected in the 19th minute for the first goal of the match. Donovan swung a corner kick into the box where Buddle headed it into the top corner.

It was Donovan's 10th assist and Buddle's 10th goal of the season, both of which lead the league.

Juninho added a second tally in the 48th minute on a 30-yard strike into the top corner of the net for his first career MLS goal.

Seattle conceded an own goal in the 77th minute to make the score 1-3. It was the first own goal by Seattle this season.

Sounders FC was outshot 15-9 (5-4 on goal) and surrendered 11 corner kicks. Seattle matched a club record for fewest corner kicks in a game with one.

L.A. defeated Seattle, 4-0, at home on May 8 behind the three assists and one goal from Donovan.

Sounders FC continues defense of its U.S. Open Cup championship when it hosts the L.A. Galaxy in a quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. PT on July 7 at the Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.

Seattle returns to the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field on July 11 to host FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. PT.
