Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, WA - The Everett Silvertips carried the play for the final 30 minutes and into overtime in front of over 6,600 fans Wednesday night at Comcast Arena, but ultimately suffered another shootout loss to the rival Seattle Thunderbirds by a final score of 4-3. After falling in shootouts at both ends of a home-and-home set against their Western Washington rivals, the 'Tips will face Moose Jaw on Saturday before hosting Seattle again next Wednesday.
Ryan Harrison led the way for Everett offensively, scoring two goals and assisting on the other by Teal Burns. Josh Winquist also chipped in a pair of assists as the 'Tips rallied from a 3-1 deficit midway through the contest to force overtime and gain a point for the fourth consecutive game. For the fifth time this season however, the Silvertips were outscored 1-0 in the shootout as they dropped to 1-7 in the skills competition.
The Thunderbirds were first to get on the board when defenseman Cason Machacek's shot from the blue line made its way through traffic and inside the post at 9:12. Just minutes after Cody Fowlie laid a heavy hit that knocked out a pane of glass behind the Seattle goal, the 'Tips tied the game off a draw as Josh Winquist and Ryan Harrison helped get the puck out front to Teal Burns for the finish into a wide open net. Seattle re-took the lead late in the period when Luke Lockhart won a race to a loose puck and cut to the net before slipping it underneath Kent Simpson for a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1 after one.
The T-Birds extended their lead in the second frame at 4-on-4 as Simpson stopped Marcel Noebels' initial shot only to see the rebound trickle right to Lockhart for a tap-in goal and a 3-1 lead for the visitors. Everett came back within a goal five minutes later when Winquist and Kohl Bauml battled in the corner to get the puck into the circle, where Harrison one-timed it past Calvin Pickard. The 'Tips harnessed the momentum for the remainder of the period and trailed just 3-2 going into intermission.
The Silvertips came out hard in the third, pressuring Seattle and finally tying the game with five minutes to go when Harrison's long shorthanded shot from the left boards caromed off Pickard's glove and in to knot the score at three. Everett enjoyed the superior scoring chances throughout the remainder of regulation and overtime, including a partial breakaway by Bauml and a dangerous one-timer from Josh Birkholz, but couldn't pull ahead before the shootout. Then after both teams were scoreless in the first two rounds and the 'Tips were again stoned in round three, Lockhart capped the 4-3 T-Birds win with the lone goal of the shootout.
Kent Simpson (5-16-1-5) ended up with 28 saves on the night as the Silvertips were outshot 35-32. Calvin Pickard (15-14-0-1) stopped 32 shots and improved to 4-1 in shootouts this year while stopping all six Everett shooters over the past two nights. Both teams were again scoreless on the powerplay, each finishing 0 for 2.
Next up for the 'Tips is a New Year's Eve showdown with the Moose Jaw Warriors out of the Eastern Conference Saturday night at 6:05 pm at Comcast Arena. Following their final out-of-conference game this season, the Silvertips will then host Seattle again next Wednesday night at 7:05 pm in downtown Everett.
