St. Paul Saints News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX - The 2011 season for the St. Paul Saints was successful in so many different areas, but unfortunately they couldn't beat the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the fifth and deciding game of the American Association Championship Series losing 8-5 on Monday night as the AirHogs claimed the title.

The AirHogs took an early lead in the third inning when Danny Figueroa led off with a walk and scored when Stephen Douglas tripled him home to make it 1-0. German Duran, with the infield in, singled through the left side scoring Douglas to make it 2-0.

The AirHogs added to their lead in the fifth when Figueroa reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jake Krause. With one out Duran clubbed a two-run homer to left, his first of the playoffs, to make it 4-0.

The Saints wouldn't give up without a fight and came back against former National League Rookie of the Year Award Winner Jason Jennings. Jennings retired the first 10 men he faced before giving up a single to Shane Costa in the fourth. It was in the seventh, however, that they finally broke through. Ryan Patterson led off with a single and Ole Sheldon followed that up with a single to put runners at first and second. Ronnie Bourquin walked to load the bases with nobody out. With one out Richard Mercado walked to force in a run and make it 4-1. Aharon Eggleston singled in a run to make it 4-2 and a sacrifice fly by Jake Krause made it 4-3. Jennings would leave the game for Jon Fulton who struck out Adam Frost to end the inning. The one run deficit would be the closest the Saints would get.

In the bottom of the seventh the AirHogs would tack on two as Douglas singled with one out and Duran singled him to second. After a walk to David Espinosa loaded the bases, lefty Jesse English came in to face the lefty Greg Porter. English struck out Porter and then righty Kyle Foster came in to face Cesar Nicolas. He would line a two-run single to center to make it 6-3.

The AirHogs tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run double to right to make it 8-3.

The Saints got a two-run homer from Richard Mercado in the ninth, but couldn't get any closer as their 2011 season came to a close.
