October 5, 2019 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston - Sean Sconone of the Dallas Rattlers has been awarded the Brine Goalie of the Year Award at the 2019 MLL Honors, having taken place at Union Station in Denver, CO. on Saturday October 5.

The rookie goaltender led the MLL in save percentage as he stopped 55.81% of the shots he faced and had the lowest goals against average in the league for goalies that played over ten hours of game time during the season with an average 12.09 goals against in 14 games played. Although his outstanding play was not enough to lead the Dallas Rattlers to the playoffs, he was able to bring them back into the playoff race after starting the season with an 0-7 record and eventually finishing 7-9, only one game behind the Atlanta Blaze for the final playoff spot.

Sconone was able to beat out the other finalists for the Brine Goalie of the Year Award who were Chris Madalon of the Atlanta Blaze and Dillon Ward of the Denver Outlaws. Madalon was able to finish the season with a save percentage of 50.75%, a goals against average of 14.02, led the league in saves with 204 and in rebound saves with 159 while playing in all 16 games for the Blaze. Ward had an impressive season as well as he finished with a save percentage of 50.82% and a goals against average of 13.01 while leading the Cannons to the third seed in the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

As a rookie, Sconone started the 2019 season without a team but was signed by the Rattlers on June 6. He joined the Rattlers' in their third game of the season, against the Blaze on June 21. Sconone had his first start on June 27 against the defending champion, the Denver Outlaws, in a 15-9 loss. He didn't start again for the next two games but was given another chance to start on July 14 against the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The game against the Bayhawks ended in a 13-11 loss but finished with Sconone having saved 15 of the 28 shots on goal. After the performance against Chesapeake, Sconone was given the reigns and would carry the Rattlers to an amazing six straight wins, taking them from an 0-7 start to the season right back into the playoff hunt at 6-7. The Rattlers weren't able to get themselves to MLL Championship Weekend but Sconone's impact was felt throughout the team and league as he was almost able to turn an 0-7 start into a trip to the playoffs.

The Rattlers' star goalie came out of the University of Massachusetts and finished his senior season with a save percentage of 61.5% and ranked third in Division I with an 8.61 goals against average. Sconone won the C. Markland Jr. Kelly Award as the nation's most outstanding goalie in 2019 and became the first player in the program's history to win one of the five major awards. (Other C. Markland Jr. Kelly Award winners include Quint Kessenich, Austin Kaut and Niko Amato.) Even with having an outstanding collegiate career, Sconone went undrafted in the 2019 MLL Collegiate Draft. He was picked up by the Rattlers in June.

"Sean was exactly what we needed this season," Bill Warder, head coach of the Rattlers said. "In the early part of the season we were slow to put the pieces together and once Sean came in there was a new energy on the defensive end that sparked our six game win streak. I'm very proud of what he was able to accomplish this year as a Rattler and goaltender. He is much deserving of this award and I am looking forward to seeing him lead us to compete for a Championship next season."

The Chesapeake Bayhawks will play the Denver Outlaws for the MLL Championship on Sunday at 1:00 P.M. EDT/ 11:00 MDT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. The MLL Championship Game will air live on ESPN2. Tickets are currently available on majorleaguelacrosse.com.
