Outlaws Advance to Fourth Consecutive MLL Championship Game
October 5, 2019 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Denver, CO - In August of 2008, lacrosse legend John Grant Jr. suffered what looked like a career ending injury. Grant Jr. ruptured the burst sac in his elbow, and shortly thereafter an infection spread to his ACL. Eleven years later, Grant is defying all odds and on Sunday he will play for yet another MLL Championship after a remarkable performance.
Grant Jr. and the Denver Outlaws faced off against the Boston Cannons in the second semifinal from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver. The Outlaws got off to a slow start. A second quarter goal from Cannons midfielder Kyle Denhoff made it 10-4 Cannons just over 20 minutes into the game.
Denver would score four of the next give goals to get them back into the game. Fan favorite Mikie Schlosser scored two of those goals.
The turning point came in the third quarter when Grant, the now hobbled veteran, scored three consecutive goals to tie the game at 14. Grant scored one of his patented behind-the-back goals to galvanize the crowd and his teammates.
The Outlaws made sure they would be playing for the title at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sunday by scoring the game's final three goals. Chris Aslanain is credited with the game winner at the 5:41 mark of the fourth.
The Outlaws will take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Sunday for the 2019 MLL Championship. The Bayhawks beat the Atlanta Blaze earlier Friday evening.
