Nick Marrocco Wins the David Huntley Man of the Year Award
October 5, 2019 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston - Nick Marrocco of the Boston Cannons has been awarded the David Huntley Man of the Year Award at the 2019 MLL Honors at Union Station in Denver, CO. on Saturday.
The award is named in honor of David Huntley, the former MLL coach who passed away in 2017, and is given to the individual who has demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, professionalism and service to their community. The award is voted on by members of the Coach Huntley's family, Commissioner Sandy Brown, select MLL alumni and members of the media.
Marrocco has been named the recipient of the award as he continuously made selfless and meaningful contributions to Major League Lacrosse, the game of lacrosse and to his community. Throughout the season, Marrocco was consistently leading many of the Cannons' community initiatives and made sure to leave an impact on the people around him. He was the primary spokesperson for the Cannons during their Annual "Cannons Fighting Cancer" initiative which raised over $100,000 to support Boston Children's Hospital. He also led his teammates to Weymouth, MA to visit the Mighty Quinn who is a Cannons fan that had recently had surgery to remove a brain tumor. Marrocco was also a participant in the Cap Walk 2019 Fashion Show to benefit the Verma Foundation in September.
The commitment to the Cannons, MLL and the Boston community is also evident in Marrocco's actions as he signed a three year deal with the Cannons in September 2018 which will keep him under contract through 2021. Marrocco is committed to the Cannons fans as he is known to always ensure that every fan receives an autograph or photo before leaving the stadium.
All of the hard work Marrocco has done off the field this season has not slowed him down on the field. Marrocco has led the Cannons to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. He finished fourth in the league with a save percentage of 50.26% and finished third in the league with a goals against average of 12.74 (among goalies with at least ten hours of game time). He has had game-winning saves worthy of Sports Center.
"I'm so proud to have a person of Marrocco's character on our team," said Sean Quirk, head coach of the Boston Cannons. "Obviously he's very talented on the field but he doesn't slow down even after leaving the field. He's such a down-to-earth guy who takes advantage of his platform in all the right ways, by helping others. He's only in his second year and he was a unanimous selection for captain by the coaching staff as he is extremely humble on and off the field. We're so proud of the person he is and the things that he's been able to do for our team, the Boston community and the lacrosse community."
Marrocco was in good company, as each team's candidate demonstrated the characteristics MLL is proud to have in the league and were worthy of recognition. The other nominees for the award included: Shayne Jackson of the Atlanta Blaze, Steele Stanwick of the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Jacques Monte of the Dallas Rattlers, Matt Bocklet of the Denver Outlaws and Kevin Crowley of the New York Lizards. Jackson was selected as the Blaze's nominee as he demonstrated leadership on the field while also working within youth lacrosse programs including Pace Academy lacrosse program, Thunder LB3 Lacrosse and playing for NLL's Georgia Swarm. Stanwick remains committed to the game of lacrosse as he made appearances at Baltimore City Elementary Schools and is the assistant coach for John Hopkins University Women's Lacrosse team while maintaining a professional and positive attitude while playing in the MLL. Monte, the assistant coach for the Rattlers, has consistently shown a dedication to the sport of lacrosse as he traveled to Texas to build the first junior Rattlers lacrosse teams and has been coaching the game for 42 years. Bocklet, captain of the Outlaws' three championship teams, is now the assistant coach of the Outlaws and works as the manager of the Outlaws Academy looking to grow both boys' and girls' lacrosse in Colorado. Crowley was the Lizards' nominee due to his engagement in the lacrosse community and leadership to the team while he runs a youth travel lacrosse program in Philadelphia and competes with the NLL's Philadelphia Wings.
Each of the nominees for the David Huntley Man of the Year Award have demonstrated their commitment to the game of lacrosse and MLL, as well as outstanding service to their communities. They have gone above and beyond to serve their communities, their teams, the league and the game. Major League Lacrosse is grateful for the dedication and support that each of the nominees for this year's award displayed throughout the year.
The Chesapeake Bayhawks will play the Denver Outlaws for the MLL Championship on Sunday at 1:00 P.M. EDT/ 11:00 MDT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. The MLL Championship Game will air live on ESPN2. Tickets are currently available on majorleaguelacrosse.com.
