
Seagle's 10th Inning Base Hit Lifts Missions Past Midland

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions began a six-game series with the Midland RockHounds on Tuesday afternoon. After jumping out to an early lead, the two clubs went back-and-forth and needed 10 innings to decide a winner. In the top of the 10th inning, Chandler Seagle drove in two runs with a single to left field. San Antonio added an insurance to secure a 7-4 victory. They improved to 17-17 on the year.
Royber Salinas was the starting pitcher for the RockHounds. The right-hander did not make out of the first inning as the Missions plated two runs on three hits and nearly batted through the order. Ripken Reyes started the game with a base hit and stole second base. He advanced to third base on a throwing error from Salinas. After walking Tirso Ornelas, Pedro Castellanos drove in Reyes with a sacrifice fly. Daniel Johnson hit a double and Ornelas came in to score. After allowing two walks and a base hit, he was replaced by Trey Supak with the bases loaded and two outs. The Missions took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Duncan Snider was the starting pitcher for the Missions. The right-hander surrendered the lead in the bottom of the first inning after allowing two runs on three hits. Cooper Bowman started the frame with a base hit and advanced to second on a passed ball from Chandler Seagle. Back-to-back ground outs brought in Bowman from third base. Darrell Hernaiz kept the inning alive with a double. Logan Davidson tripled and tied the game at 2-2. On the play, Davidson attempted to complete the inside-the-park home run but was tagged out an acrobatic tag from Seagle.
San Antonio regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Luis Aviles Jr. doubled to start the frame and Ray-Patrick Didder was hit by a pitch. Seagle attempted a sacrifice bunt but popped out to his counterpart. Calvin Coker entered the game to replace Supak. Coker struck out Reyes for the second out. Ornelas drove in Aviles Jr. with a single to right field. San Antonio gained a 3-2 advantage.
Midland tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the frame, Snider allowed a solo home run to Shane McGuire. His second long ball of the year made it a 3-3 ballgame. After walking the next two batters, Snider was replaced by Justin Lopez who retired the next two batters to end the inning.
The RockHounds took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lopez allowed a leadoff walk to Lazaro Armenteros and was replaced by Fred Schlichtholz. The southpaw struck out the first batter he faced before issuing a walk to Chase Calabuig. Cooper Bowman doubled and Armenteros came in to score. After striking out the next batter, Schlichtholz was replaced by Kevin Kopps. He walked a batter to load the bases before getting a ground out to end the inning. The Missions now trailed 4-3.
The Missions had an opportunity in the top of the eighth inning to tie or regain the lead. Facing Shohei Tomioka, Aviles Jr. Drew a two-out walk and Ray-Patrick Didder hit a single. With two runners on and two outs, Seagle flew out to end the scoring threat.
In the top of the ninth inning, Austin Briggs entered the game for a save attempt. The first batter he faced was Reyes who was hit by a pitch. The southpaw issued a walk to Ornelas to put the first two batters on base. Castellanos grounded into a double play and Reyes advanced to third. Daniel Johnson tied the game with a base hit to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kopps retired the first two batters before allowing a base hit to Bowman. Michel Baez entered the game to replace Kopps. The right-hander threw a wild pitch and then intentionally walked Lawrence Butler. He issued a second walk to load the bases. Hernaiz grounded out to end the inning and forced extra-innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, Michael De La Cruz was the placed runner at second base and Briggs remained on the mound. Connor Hollis was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Aviles Jr. laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Didder drew a walk to load the bases. Seagle gave the Missions the lead with a two-run single to left field. On the play, Didder moved to third and Seagle advanced to second base. Reyes drove in a run on a squeeze bunt single. Ornelas grounded into a double play to end the inning. San Antonio took a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Hernaiz was the placed runner at second base and Nick Hernandez entered the game for a save attempt. The right-hander struck out Davidson to start the frame. Denzel Clarke grounded out and Hernaiz advanced to third base. Hernandez struck out Armenteros to end the game.

Right-hander Jake Walkinshaw (1-3, 5.34) is scheduled to pitch for the RockHounds. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. from Momentum Bank Ballpark.
