Sea Dogs Victorious in First Meeting against Phoenix

SHERBROOKE, QC - The first-ever meeting between the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Sherbrooke Phoenix ended with the Sea Dogs coming up on top of an 8-4 decision. The Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet was packed with 3,449 for Friday night's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Stephen MacAulay had a hat-trick and Devon Oliver-Dares tallied a pair of goals for Saint John while Jonathan Huberdeau tallied four assists. Jakub Izacky and Ryan Tesink also had a goal and an assist each while Marcus Cuomo added a single. Sebastien Auger stopped 23 of 27 shots in the win. The Sea Dogs pull to 10-9-0-0 in the victory.

Jeremy Beaudry had two goals and an assist and Cole Hawes added a goal and two helpers with Daniel Audette scoring a single in response for the Phoenix with Both games are available on News 88.9 FM with Tim Roszell and the TELUS QMJHL Webcast. Jack Flinn making 12 saves on 18 shots before giving way to Jacob Gervais-Chouinard after 27:05 of play. Gervais-Choudinard made 28 saves on 30 shots on 32:24 of play. Sherbrooke now sits at 3-15-1-1.

MacAulay wasted little time getting the opening goal for the Sea Dogs. While on the power play, MacAulay took advantage of the extra man by potting the first marker, his ninth of the season, just 1:02 into the game. Jonathan Huberdeau and Jason Seed notched the assists on the play.

Auger made an incredible save, spreading his legs and robbing the Phoenix on a back door pass with the right pad just pass the five minute mark. The Phoenix power play proved to be pushing too hard though and tied the game at 5:39, scored by Audette.

The Phoenix capitalized again on the power play, this time completing the back door play that Auger foiled on the initial try. At 9:08, Beaudry made it 2-1 Phoenix.

Less than a minute later, the Sea Dogs drew even with a goal from Oliver-Dares on the wraparound rebound at 9:56. Jakub Izacky tried the wraparound and Andreas Tsogkas started the play to grab the assists.

Again on the power play, the Phoenix pulled ahead with Hawes streaking in and deking Auger to open up the net and pot the marker at 11:09 of the first to make it 3-2 Phoenix.

Oliver-Dares notched his first two-goal game with his second scored on a one-timer coming at 14:01 on a play started by Steven Duda and Gagne.

The second period started just as quickly as the first and with the same characters as MacAulay nabbed his tenth of the year with Huberdeau and Gagne notching assists on the play.

Jason Cameron nearly made it 5-3 with a shorthanded chance on a Phoenix turnover, shutting the five-hole quickly on a quick shot from the slot.

Izacky scored his fifth of the year at 10:44 with Olivier Leblanc setting it up for the assist.

Cuomo scored his third of the year from right side of Flinn as Gagne kept the puck in at the middle and fed it to the corner. Anderson put the puck behind the net where is squirted out front and Cuomo put it away at 12:55 to make it 6-3.

The Phoenix used the back door play to score, again on the power play, after Auger made the first stop on Beaudry, the rebound landed right in front where Beaudry got his second chance and converted at 19:05.

The Sea Dogs outshot and outscored Sherbrooke 23-9 and 3-1 in the second frame, which ended 6-4 for Saint John.

Huberdeau had a great chance to extend the Sea Dogs lead with an open net, only to have his stick break, allowing Chouinard to make the save.

Auger stood tall on two chances, one for Hawes, sticking the left pad to the post and stopping the Phoenix forward. The second chance, this stop on Audette, could be called highway robbery with the glove stop denying the young forward on any chance, again on the back-door play.

Tesink scored shorthanded, forcing a great turnover and streaking in on the breakaway. His deke left the five-hole open on Chouinard and he tucked it into the back of the net at 10:49.

MacAulay completed the hat-trick at 15:20, giving the 20-year-old veteran his second three-goal performance of the year. Huberdeau's assist on the play gave him four on the night and Tesink added a helper as well. MacAulay's third of the game ties him with Huberdeau for the team lead with 11 goals on the year, and made the final 8-4 in favour of Saint John.

The Sea Dogs continue their road swing tomorrow night as they take on the Durmmondville Voltigeurs tomorrow night at 8 PM and then head to Blainville-Boisbriand to visit the Armada Sunday afternoon at 5 PM. Both games are available on News 88.9 FM with Tim Roszell and the TELUS QMJHL Webcast .
