SYDNEY, NS - Radim Salda's power play goal with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the third period proved to be the game-winner, as the Saint John Sea Dogs earned their first win of the season, a 3-1 triumph over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Centre 200.

It was Salda's first goal in the QMJHL. Daniel Hardie and Landon Quinney also found the net for Saint John (1-3-1-0).

Drake Batherson had the lone goal for Cape Breton (3-1-0-0).

The Sea Dogs held an edge in play in a scoreless first period, outshooting the Screaming Eagles, 17-6.

Saint John's best chance to score came shorthanded with under seven minutes left.

Alexandre Lafreniere stole the puck in the neutral zone and raced in alone. The rookie forward fired a shot that goalie Kevin Mandolese deflected away with his right side.

Batherson opened the scoring 43 seconds into the second period.

The Ottawa Senators' prospect stole the puck at his own blueline and broke away. Batherson deked to his backhand and flipped a shot past the glove of Alex D'Orio in the Saint John goal.

Hardie tied the game halfway through the period, shortly after a Sea Dog power play ended.

With play in the Saint John zone, Ostap Safin created a turnover and charged ahead on a breakaway. He saw Hardie joining him on the left side and laid it across the crease. Hardie one-timed a snap shot into the top of the goal.

The game stayed tied until fewer than five minutes remained in the third.

Late in a four-minute power play, the Sea Dogs worked the puck around the Screaming Eagles' zone to Salda in the left circle. The rookie Czech blueliner took one stride toward the net before crushing a slap shot past Mandolese's glove for his first QMJHL goal.

Cape Breton pulled Mandolese for an extra attacker with just over two minutes to go.

Quinney sealed the Sea Dogs' first win with an empty-netter fired from the neutral zone in the final minute.

D'Orio took the win and first star with 22 saves while Mandolese snared second star with 33 stops in a losing cause. Batherson's goal made him third star in front of 2,437 fans in attendance.
