Sea Dogs Top Foreurs In Shootout

SAINT JOHN, NB - The Saint John Sea Dogs needed a shootout to edge the Val-d'Or Foreurs 5-4 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday.

Aidan Kelly had the shootout winner to give Saint John the victory before a crowd of 3,321 fans at Harbour Station. Stanislav Galiev scored in his return from Washington Capitals camp, while Jason Cameron, Mackenzie Brown and Stephen Anderson added singles. Mathieu Corbeil, back from Columbus Blue Jackets camp, made 31 saves for the win as the Dogs dressed just 15 skaters, including Pierre Durepos, who returned from Los Angeles Kings camp.

Benjamin Casavant had two goals and an assist for Val-d'Or, and linemate Michael Beaudry had three assists. The Foreurs got singles from Artem Sergeev and former Sea Dog Nicolas Larocque-Marcoux, while Francois Tremblay made 24 saves in the loss.

The fans were treated to a special visit from Jaques Plante Trophy winner, and Sea Dogs Memorial Cup goaltender Jacob Deserres, who dropped the puck in the ceremonial opening face-off.

The Foreurs gained the man advantage at 2:05 and didn't waste any time, with Casavant converting only 16 seconds later.

At the 11:03 mark, Anderson made a play for the puck and forced a turnover in the neutral zone. Breaking in down the left wing, Anderson powered past the defender and slid a backhander past Tremblay to tie the game at 1-1.

The play from the Sea Dogs was strong and aggressive after that, and at 15:50, Galiev potted a top-shelf goal for his first of the season on a pass from behind the net from Scott Oke to make it 2-1 in favour of the Dogs.

Less than two minutes later, Val d'Or tied it up on a jumbled play in front of Corbeil and the score would remain 2-2 to end the first.

Brown chased down a rebound on a point shot from Gagne at 6:06 for his first career QMJHL goal. With the pressure sustained in the Foreurs end, Cameron sniped his first of the year at 8:43 of the second on a nice play kept alive by Spencer MacDonald. MacDonald stretched out to keep the puck in the offensive zone. After a cycle down low, Kelly sent it back up to MacDonald who fed Cameron a one-time pass he fired into the top corner over Tremblay to make it 4-2.

One constant in the game was the play of returnee Galiev. Always a threat, Galiev worked magic, showing off why the Capitals chose him in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in the third round (86th overall).

Sergeev got Val-d'Or back within one on a power play at 3:26 of the third, and the Foreurs outshot the Sea Dogs 15-2 in the frame. But Corbeil nearly made the one-goal margin stand, including a spectacular toe save Casavant with less than five minutes to go. But despite Corbeil's best efforts, Marcoux tied it up with 2.3 seconds remaining, finishing a heads-up pass from behind the net by Beaudry.

With overtime solving nothing, the game headed to a shootout. Galiev, Danick Gauthier and Scott Oke were unable to solve Tremblay at one end, while Jean-François Leblanc, Casvant and Marcoux were stopped by Corbeil. In the fourth round of the shootout Aidan Kelly snapped one by Tremblay to break the deadlock, and Corbeil stood tall against Beaudry to seal the win.

The Dogs go for their third straight victory Saturday against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Game time is 7 p.m. at Harbour Station. Both season and single-game tickets are on sale.
