The Saint John Sea Dogs (9-16-0-1) rode a strong penalty kill to their third straight win 2-1 over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (10-17-1-1) on Wednesday night.
Saint John's special teams held their opponents to 0/6 on the powerplay during the game.
Vincent Despont and Connor Trenholm scored the goals for the Sea Dogs while Nikolas Hurtubise was stellar in net once again stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced.
The Armada struck first 5:11 into the first period as Alexis Gendron found Jonathan Fauchon in front all alone who fired a shot past Hurtubise for an early 1-0 lead.
Philippe Fauchon came close to making it 2-0, walking to the Sea Dogs net from the right corner and putting a tricky backhand shot on in tight that Hurtubise gloved down.
Saint John got their first close chance a minute later as Vince Elie found Brady Burns in the slot off the rush, but Burns' ensuing shot was deflected away by Sheehan.
Alexey Kulikov then answered back for the Armada, creating a turnover at the Sea Dogs blue line, deking past multiple defenders but could not maneuver the puck past Hurtubise.
Burns then came close again for the Sea Dogs, this time it was MacDonald finding him alone in front from behind the net, but Sheehan got just enough of the shot to keep it from crossing the line.
The Armada created almost two minutes of sustained pressure in the Sea Dogs zone to end the period, but Hurtubise made multiple key stops to keep the score at 1-0 into first intermission.
Shots were 10-5 for the Armada after the first period.
The Armada continued to pressure in the second. Just after an early powerplay expired they maintained possession in the Sea Dogs zone and worked it out to Colby Huggan in the slot who fired the puck just over the crossbar.
After several minutes of back-and-forth play the Sea Dogs, and in particular Burns, swarmed the Armada net with multiple shots, but could not put any of them past Sheehan.
With 6:17 left in the second, Despont picked up a pass from Bilodeau coming out of the penalty box and immediately joined Jared Cosman on a 2-on-1 break. The two connected on a pair of back-and-forth passes that Despont finished on the Armada's back door to tie the game 1-1.
Shots after the second were 22-20 for the Armada.
3:41 into the third Burns slipped a nice neutral zone pass to Elie that Elie took into the Armada zone and fed cross-ice to Trenholm for a one-timer past Sheehan to put the Sea Dogs ahead 2-1.
Trenholm got in behind the Armada defence just two minutes later for a short-handed breakaway that Sheehan was up to the task for.
Alexis Cournoyer found a lane to the Armada net as well just a minute later, but again couldn't put home an insurance marker.
Two minutes later the Sea Dogs continued to press as Cole Burbidge fed a cross-crease pass to Eriks Mateiko that Mateiko tipped just wide.
With under six minutes to play, the Sea Dogs again on the penalty kill, Pavel Simek blocked a shot to propel himself on a shorthanded breakaway, but he too would be stopped by Sheehan.
The Sea Dogs penalty kill saved their toughest task for last, killing off a five-minute power-play to end the game, just holding on for the 2-1 win.
Final shots were 34-27 for the Armada.
