Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- On the strength of a highly-impressive 37-save performance by veteran goaltender Evan Mosher, the P.E.I. Rocket earned a 3-1 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs in front of over five thousand fans at Harbour Station on Wednesday night.
Mosher thwarted Saint John's star-laded attack time and time again in backstopping his team to victory, with Samson Mahbod (2) and Matthew Hobbs provided quantitative offence for the Garden Province's major junior squad.
Vancouver Canuck prospect Steven Anthony tallied the lone marker of the evening for the home team, while overage net minder Marco Cousineau made 24 stops in a losing effort for the league-leading Sea Dogs (51-11-1-0)
After a goalless first period, rookie P.E.I. defenseman Matthew Hobbs blasted a shot past Cousineau to put the visitors up 1-0 in the twenty-fifth minute of play. A crease-hovering Steven Anthony tied things up at one apiece a few minutes later, burying a loose puck to pick up the 17th goal of his season.
The Rocket went up 2-1 at the 6:58 mark of period number three, as Samson Mahbod knocked home a rebound produced by a Michael Stinziani shot to improve his 2009-10 goals total to 19.
Saint John vehemently pursued the equalizer throughout the duration of regulation, but Mosher was miraculously able to keep the puck out of the net in leading his team to the hard-fought road win. An empty-net tally off the stick of Samson Mahbod late in the match gave the Rocket the decision by a 3-1 final.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Friday night showdown with the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station (puck drop - 7:30pm). This game has officially been sold out, with a limited number of standing-room-only tickets available at the arena box office (657-1234). A victory on Friday will secure Saint John home ice advantage throughout the 2010 President's Cup Playoffs and give the Sea Dogs their first-ever QMJHL Atlantic Division title.
Fans attending Friday's contest are encouraged to dress in green on the First Annual Irish Night, with non-perishable food items set to be collected for charity as part of the 2009-10 Brunswick News Rivalry Cup Challenge. Moncton currently leads the season-long competition 14.5 - 10.5.
