SYDNEY, NS - It was the 500th regular season game for the Saint John Sea Dogs as they took on the Shawinigan Cataractes in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday afternoon. The Sea Dogs dropped the contest 3-2 in front of 3,780 fans at Harbour Station.

Ryan Tesink had a goal and an assist and Jonathan Huberdeau also scored for the Sea Dogs while Alex Fournier stopped 5 of 7 in the first period, before giving way to Sebastien Auger who made 19 saves on 20 shots in relief in the last two periods. The Sea Dogs fell to to 9-9-0-0 with the loss.

Olivier Jodouin, Frederick Gaudreau and JC Campagna replied for the Cataractes with Marvin Cupper making 25 saves on 27 shots in the win. The Cataractes now sit at 3-13-1-1.

Kevin Gagne was also hitting a milestone Sunday, setting a Sea Dogs record in his 252nd game. The mark passes Yann Sauve for the All-time games played by a defenceman and into third place for games played overall.

The first period saw very few chances until the final five minutes. The Cataractes scored twice. The first came off the stick of Jodouin at 15:06 with the second coming just 41 seconds later from leading scorer Gaudreau.

Noah Zilbert had the best chance for the Sea Dogs with 1:04 remaining, drawing a penalty in the process. Zilbert dipsee-doodled past two Shawinigan defenders before being spun around in front of the net.

The Sea Dogs turned things up in the second period, which started with Auger in goal.

Huberdeau got the Sea Dogs on the board with his 11th of the season at 10:56 of the middle frame. Ryan Tesink took the puck into the Cataractes zone and dropped it to Huberdeau. He snuck into the corner and fired a shot on Cupper that trickled in to make it 2-1.

Jakub Izacky had a great chance on a 2-on-2 play with Aidan Kelly, ringing one off the top of Cupper's mask.

The final period started out in favour of the Cataractes with Campagna scoring on the power play at 4:33 to make it 3-1 Shawinigan.

Tesink brought the Dogs as close as a goal on a Sea Dog power play at 11:13 on a nice play started at the blueline by Gagne. Stpehen MacAulay notched the other assist on the play.

That was as close as the Sea Dogs would come to the victory.

The Sea Dogs will be away as they start a five-game road swing next weekend. The first stop will be in Sherbrooke on Friday to take on the QMJHL's newest team at 8 PM. The trip also includes stops in Drummondville, Blanville, Cape Breton and Bathurst.

The Sea Dogs return home to take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Nov. 24 as the Team honours the Saint John Vito's and the 20th Anniversary of their Allan Cup win. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.ca or by calling 657-1234.
