Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
DRUMMONDVILLE - Joey Ratelle's penalty shot goal late in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Drummondville Voltigeurs defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 5-2, Friday at Centre Marcel-Dionne.
Marc-Olivier Duquette, Alex Barre-Boulet, Ryan DaSilva and Benjamin Gagne also had goals for Drummondville (11-13-0-3), which snapped a four-game losing skid.
Thomas Chabot and Matthew Highmore scored for Saint John (18-7-2-1), which saw its four-game winning streak come to a close.
A scoring summary is available HERE .
The Voltigeurs scored the only goal of the first period nine minutes in, just one second after the end of a power play.
A scrum in the left corner saw the puck put into the slot for a wide-open Duquette. The rookie defenceman rifled a quick wrist shot past the glove of a surprised Alex D'Orio in the Sea Dogs' goal.
Saint John lost the services of overager Bokondji Imama late in the frame after he was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for a check to the head on Drummondville forward Nathan Hudgin. Hudgin left the game temporarily but did return.
Chabot tied the game with a power play goal three minutes into the second, firing a shot from the high slot that beat a screened Anthony Dumont-Bouchard on his blocker side.
But Drummondville regained the lead with a shorthanded goal nearly halfway through the period.
Barre-Boulet stole the puck on the right side of the Saint John zone, moved toward the middle and snapped a shot that appeared to deflect over the blocker of D'Orio to make it 2-1.
The Voltigeurs made it a two-goal game with six-and-a-half minutes left in the frame.
Ratelle stripped the puck away from Chabot and cut toward the net on the right side. Chabot, in an attempt to stop him, was charged with throwing his stick, resulting in a penalty shot.
The 20-year-old Ratelle used a deke to his backhand to tuck the puck past D'Orio and inside the left post.
The Sea Dogs cut the deficit to 3-2 with another power play marker late in the period when Mathieu Joseph's wrist shot from the right circle was redirected past Dumont-Bouchard by Highmore, who was parked at the top of the crease.
Saint John were assessed a penalty in the final minute of the period and another at the twenty-minute mark, giving the Volts a 5-on-3 power play opportunity to start the third.
The home side capitalized on that two-man advantage when DaSilva took a pass at the left point and blasted a one-timer over D'Orio's blocker.
Down by two, Saint John pulled D'Orio for an extra skater with more than two minutes to go.
Gagne found the empty net with 59.5 seconds left.
Dumont-Bouchard earned the win and first star with 24 stops. D'Orio suffered his first regulation-time loss of the season with 26 saves.
Joseph's two assists made him second star while Barre-Boulet snared third star with a goal and an assist in front of 2,055 fans in attendance.
