Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - Radim Salda scored 1:25 into overtime to give the Saint John Sea Dogs a 5-4 victory over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Sunday at Harbour Station.
The win snapped Saint John's nine-game losing streak.
Ostap Safin led the Sea Dogs (4-9-3-1) with two goals and two assists while Anthony Boucher added a goal and an assist. Cole Reginato netted the other goal. Joe Veleno contributed three assists. Goalie Matthew Williams earned his first QMJHL win.
Peter Abbandonato, Tyler Hinam and Mathieu Boucher had a goal and an assist apiece for Rouyn-Noranda (10-2-2-2). Jacob Neveu also scored.
The Huskies opened the scoring on their first shot of the game 65 seconds in.
Abbandonato took a pass on the right wing and sent a hard wrister from the circle that beat Williams on his blocker side.
The Sea Dogs tied it 54 seconds later with a power play goal.
Salda took a pass at the blueline, stepped toward the middle and rifled a shot that Anthony Boucher deflected past the blocker of goalie Samuel Harvey.
The visitors regained the lead nine minutes into the second when Hinam whistled a heavy wrist shot from the left circle that got past Williams' glove.
Reginato evened the score again three minutes later.
The overage winger took the puck near the left point, stepped into the circle and whipped a wrister over Harvey's glove.
But Mathieu Boucher gave the Huskies their third lead of the afternoon with four minutes to go in the period.
Hinam threw a hard pass from the left point that Boucher stopped right in front of Williams. The Huskies' captain took one stride to his right and backhanded it into an open net.
Neveu gave Rouyn-Noranda a two-goal lead three minutes into the third with a heavy shot from the blueline that beat Williams on his glove side.
The Sea Dogs began their comeback more than four minutes later, with the teams skating 4-on-4.
Safin carried the puck behind the Huskies' net, stepped into the bottom of the right circle, spun and fired a hard wrist shot that eluded Harvey's blocker to make it a 4-3 game.
The Czech import struck again two shifts later, as Saint John enjoyed a 4-on-3 power play.
Safin took a pass on the left side, skated to the faceoff dot and ripped a wrist shot past the glove of Harvey.
Rouyn-Noranda won the centre-ice faceoff to begin overtime and used a give-and-go to send Abbandonato in alone in the opening seconds. The veteran winger snapped a shot from the low slot that Williams denied with his blocker.
On the ensuing rush into the Huskies' zone, Saint John forward Cedric Pare drove the net without the puck and absorbed a slash that broke his stick, giving the Sea Dogs a power play.
Salda ended the game with a heavy wrister from the high slot that beat a screened Harvey on his glove side.
Williams turned aside 26 shots in his first career win. Harvey made 24 saves in a losing cause.
Safin's four points made him first star while Hinam took second star with two points. Anthony Boucher snared third star with two points in front of 3,226 fans in attendance.
