Sea Dogs Down Titan 4-1 in Pre-Season Action
The Saint John Sea Dogs improved to 2-0-0-0 in the 2019 pre-season on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
Saint John opened the scoring at 1:41 of the first period when Jeremie Jacob slipped his first of the pre-season past Tyriq Outen.
Just two minutes later Nicolas Guay came streaking down the right side and fed a cross-crease pass to James White who tipped home his first of the pre-season to put the Dogs up 2-0.
Tommy DaSilva got the start for Saint John, splitting duties with Mathias Savoie. DaSilva saw some rubber during two Titan power plays but kept Acadie-Bathurst off the scoreboard through the first period.
Logan Chisholm went off for slashing at 16:53 and the Sea Dogs quickly capitalized on the ensuing power play. Charlie DesRoches blasted a shot from the point and Josh Lawrence was right on the door step to snap home the rebound extending the Sea Dogs lead to 3-0.
With a minute to go in the opening frame Jordan Spadafore was called for roughing after a scrum broke out in front of the Saint John goal. During the aftermath Eliott St-Pierre and Cole Rafuse dropped the gloves, both men received five-minute fighting majors.
Saint John led the shots in the period 10-9.
Penalties were plentiful in the second period as both teams played with an edge. Deakin-Poot went off for slashing at 7:18 followed by Julian Vandervoet for roughing at 16:15 and Jordan Spadafore for cross-checking at 17:52. Spadafore and former Sea Dog Ian Smallwood both received unsportsmanlike misconduct penalties for their after play scrum.
The Sea Dogs did capitalize on the power play at 14:10 after Ian Smallwood went off for high-sticking. Nicolas Guay walked in from the corner and tried to stuff it five-hole. Outen made the initial save but Cajkovic was there to knock in the rebound for his first goal of the pre-season. 4-0 Sea Dogs.
Mathias Savoie took over goaltender duties from Tommy DaSilva at the halfway mark of the period. Savoie was tested early as the Sea Dogs played short two men during 23 seconds of 5-3 late in the second. Saint John took a 4-0 nothing lead into the third period.
The Titan scored 39 seconds into the third period with a goal from overager Cole Rafuse.
The two teams then swapped penalties back and forth playing extended periods of 4-on-4. Mathias Savoie made a few huge saves down the stretch to keep the three goal lead intact. Sea Dogs take this one, 4-1.
Final shots on goal were 30-28 for the Titan. Tommy DaSilva finished with 18 saves in 30:38 while Mathias Savoie stopped 11 in 29:22.
Saint John returns to pre-season action on Thursday night when they take on the Halifax Mooseheads in Dartmouth, NS.
