BATHURST, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs kicked off the second half of their Fifth Anniversary Season with a hard-fought road win on Sunday afternoon, skating into the K.C. Irving Regional Centre and handing the Acadie-Bathurst Titan a 5-4 loss.
Tomas Jurco (2), Mike Hoffman (2), and Simon Després all scored for the Port City's major junior squad in Sunday's win, while Nick Petersen (2 assists) and Michael Kirkpatrick (3 assists) both registered multi-point games. Appearing in his first contest of the season after being called up from Woodstock (MJAHL), meanwhile, Saint John native Andrew Langan recorded an assist on Després' game-winning goal early in the third period.
In a losing effort, Acadie-Bathurst received quantitative offensive production from Jérémie Malouin, Taylor Lambke, Jess Tanguay, and Jonathan Lessard on the day,
Between the pipes, Marc-Antoine Gélinas improved to 21-5 on his overage campaign after turning aside 27 of the 31 shots sent his way by Titan skaters. At the other end of the ice, Guillaume Nadeau fell to 4-10 after surrendering five goals on 46 shots faced.
Saint John went 1-for-7 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in Sunday's victory.
After taking a 1-0 lead during a back-and-forth first period, the Sea Dogs dominated their opponents in the middle frame. The visitors outshot the hosts 25-7 during the twenty minute session, with superstar forward Mike Hoffman netting his 24th and 25th goals of the season just 1:46 apart early in the stanza.
An unassisted marker off the stick of import winger Tomas Jurco gave Saint John a 4-2 lead as Sunday's match reached the forty minute mark, with Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Simon Després tallying his sixth of the year early in period number three to put his team up by a field goal.
Acadie-Bathurst mounted a valiant comeback attempt late in regulation's final frame, but were ultimately unable to produce the equalizer as their regional adversaries held on to take the decision by a 5-4 final.
With their league-best record now standing at 32-6-1-0, the Sea Dogs will return to Saint John for their next game, a Tuesday night tilt with the P.E.I. Rocket (puck drop: 7pm).
