Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SYDNEY, N.S. - The Saint John Sea Dogs have swept the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for the second straight season to advance to the second round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Saint John won Game 4 of the best-of-seven series by a 5-1 score Wednesday, taking a one-goal lead into the third period and sealing it with three goals in the final frame. Stanislav Galiev and Tomas Jurco were involved in all three third-period goals, scoring 11 seconds apart to set a team playoff record and finishing with a goal and two assists each. Aidan Kelly, Charlie Coyle and Danick Gauthier had the other Saint John goals and Zack Phillips chipped in two assists. Mathieu Corbeil made 33 saves in his busiest night of work so far in the President's Cup playoffs. Saint John scored 34 goals in the series, establishing a new team mark.

Dany Potvin scored for Cape Breton and Philippe Trudeau made 26 saves in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles turned in their strongest effort of the series so far, holding the Dogs off early. Gauthier had a breakaway less than five minutes in, but Trudeau waited him out and stopped his deke to the forehand.

Cape Breton got on the board first when Potvin beat Corbeil at the 11-minute mark, a goal that was video reviewed as the net came off its moorings on the play.

Kelly tied it up on a shot from the right-wing circle at 15:03. The unassisted marker was the second of the playoffs for the Saint John native.

The Sea Dogs faced more adversity early in the second period when Oliver Cooper was called for delay of game at the beginning of the period to give Cape Breton a two-man advantage for 1:05. But the Sea Dogs killed both penalties, with Corbeil making a highlight-reel sliding cross-ice save to keep the score tied. Saint John finished a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill while going 1-for-6 on the power play.

Charlie Coyle continued his scoring streak, powering around a defender on the left wing, cutting to the net and jamming it in to give the Dogs the lead on a 4-on-4 at 8:21. Pierre Durepos assisted on the goal by Coyle, who has scored in all four playoff games and set a new team record for goals in a playoff series with nine.

The Eagles outshot Saint John 13-12 in the second period and stayed within one until Jurco added the insurance marker on a rebound 3:06 into the third. Galiev and Phillips assisted on the goal, Jurco's third of the playoffs. The assist gave Galiev 56 career points, moving him into top spot on the team's all-time playoff scoring list, and giving him the career playoff scoring lead among active players in the QMJHL.

The Dogs came right back down off the faceoff and Galiev finished a feed from Jurco to make it 4-1 at 3:17. Phillips collected the other assist on the goal, Galiev's third.

Gauthier made it 5-1 on a power play, taking a no-look pass from Galiev behind the net and burying his fifth. With the assist Galiev extended his record total to 58 points, while Jurco picked up the other helper.
