Sea Dogs Complete Sweep of Eagles
March 30, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SYDNEY, N.S. - The Saint John Sea Dogs took the next step on their quest for the President's Cup, advancing to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Wednesday.
Stanislav Galiev, Jonathan Huberdeau and Nathan Beaulieu had a goal and an assist each as the Sea Dogs completed the four-game sweep on the road. Zack Phillips added three helpers and Michael Kirkpatrick notched a goal to round out the scoring.
Mathieu Corbeil earned the win in his first start of the playoffs while Andrew Hayes suffered the loss for Cape Breton.
The Eagles continued to work hard, as they have all series long, and kept the game scoreless through the first period. Saint John held a slim 4-3 edge in shots in the opening frame.
The Sea Dogs began to open things up in the second, outshooting the Eagles 19-6. Galiev opened the scoring at the five-minute mark of the middle frame, backhanding a rebound past Hayes after the goalie was handcuffed by a Phillips shot. Huberdeau had the other assist on the goal, the fifth of the playoffs for Galiev, who has scored in all four post-season games.
Nick Parker had a partial breakaway down the right wing on the very next shift, but Corbeil came out to cut off the angle to force a shot into his chest.
In the first three games of the series, the Sea Dogs did much of their damage on the power play. Wednesday, however, they were able to take advantage while short-handed on two occasions.
Huberdeau notched the first shorthander of the night, finishing a funny play at 9:44 of the second. Eric Gelinas attempted to send a high clearance around the glass in the defensive end only to have the puck take a wild bounce out front. Phillips collected the surprise bounce and sprang Huberdeau on a breakaway, where he deked to the forehand to beat Hayes for his fifth of the playoffs.
Kirkpatrick added a second shortie at 6:07 of the third. The North Sydney, N.S., native chased down a puck at top speed, picked it up near the offensive blueline, deked to his forehand and slipped it between the legs of Hayes. Beaulieu and Stephen MacAulay assisted on the goal, Kirkpatrick's second of the playoffs.
Beaulieu rounded out the scoring at 9:11 of the third, finishing a pretty passing play with Galiev and Phillips.
The Sea Dogs will open the QMJHL quarter-finals at home, with Games 1 and 2 set for Friday, April 8 (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, April 9 (7 p.m.) Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 1 at 10 a.m., and can be obtained by calling the Harbour Station box office at (506) 657-1234, or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
