Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - The Saint John Sea Dogs pelted Prince Edward Island Rocket goalie Evan Mosher with a team-record 67 shots before finally earning a 3-2 shootout win Tuesday at Harbour Station.

Mosher stood on his head for the Rocket, making several incredible saves and stymieing wave after wave of Saint John shooters.

Tomas Jurco and Michael Kirkpatrick were the only Sea Dogs able to beat Mosher in regulation time, and both had to bat pucks out of mid-air to do it. Kirkpatrick also had an assist, while Stephen MacAulay assisted on both markers. Mathieu Corbeil made 15 saves and two of three in the shootout to earn the win in his Sea Dogs debut.

Alex Noel and Samuel Morneau had the goals for P.E.I. while Mosher was named first star with 65 saves and another in the shootout.

Jurco and Jonathan Huberdeau did the damage in the shootout for Saint John while Jamie MacIntyre was the lone Rocket shooter to bulge the twine in the breakaway contest.

With the win Saint John improves to 34-5-0-2 and becomes the first team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to clinch a playoff spot this season. P.E.I. fell to 20-18-1-3.

Noel banged in a rebound for his sixth goal of the year to open the scoring at 9:21 of the first period, with assists from Matthew Hobbs and Ben Duffy. The lopsided shots margin emerged early, with Saint John holding a 20-5 edge in the opening frame, but Mosher was equal to the task. In the second period, the Sea Dogs held a 28-4 advantage in shots, tying a team record for shots in a period, but only managed to trade goals with the Rocket.

Jurco evened the score 10:56 into the second with an incredible skill play, batting in a rebound out of the air with his backhand after Mosher made and amazing blocker save on MacAulay. Kirkpatrick drew the other assist on the goal, Jurco's 18th. But at 12:24, Morneau got a shot through Corbeil for his 23rd of the year, with assists going to Andrej Nestrasil and Philippe Paradis.

Corbeil wasn't tested often, but made a great save of his own midway through the third period, denying Rocket captain Travis McIsaac on the doorstep.

Mosher's most miraculous save may have been on Zack Phillips, who fired the record-setting 57th shot of the night from point-blank range to Mosher's right. After a great cross-ice setup by Nathan Beaulieu, Mosher slid across to deny the Phillips one-timer.

Kirkpatrick finally found the net when he knocked Pierre Durepos' knuckleball shot out of the air to tie it 2-2 at 12:43 of the third.

Mosher was determined to steal a point for his team, with another highlight-reel save to rob Stanislav Galiev in close late. Only deadly shootout snipers Jurco and Huberdeau, both with YouTube-worthy dekes, were able to secure the win for Saint John. Corbeil, meanwhile, stopped Morneau and Andrej Nestrasil to clinch the shootout win after allowing the first shot to MacIntyre.

Top 2011 NHL draft prospect Sean Couturier and the Drummondville Voltigeurs (26-11-5-1) will be in town for a pair of games Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m.) at Harbour Station. Tickets can be obtained by calling the Harbour Station box office at (506) 657-1234, or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
